Rickson Gracie FAQ

This blows my mind. Could you imagine anyone else asking Fabio Gurgel that question? Fabio could probably will himself into that position with anyone else.

Someone asked Rickson about showing some deep half move.

He replied: "if you end up in that position, you have done something wrong".

Just to throw it out there...that Rickson did not teach the armbar at the Torrence academy like Pedro Sauer did in that video. Im not saying that its wrong or anything. Just not what he emphasized this last saturday. I had seen that video before the seminar and was expecting something similar but was surprised. I found Ricksons very interesting.

Rickson also did not address the setup. He started from when the arm was across (basically, giving the opponent the armlock to see the armlock technique) in an attempt to illustrate a concept by how he positioned his legs to now allow his opponent to stack him. This was of utmost importance to him and his attention was focused on having the arm already extended by the time the leg comes around.

Assuming you are doing the armbar on your opponents right arm, He threw his hips up and locked the left shoulder...BUT without crossing the legs. His left leg clamped down on his opponents right shoulder. The right leg went into his armpit and both clamped down and pushed him away slightly. Correct use of the legs made it impossible to begin to stack. It was very interesting indeed. From that point, you wait for the right moment and throw the leg over and his arm will already be extended. He showed several times that you just follow him however he might try and escape and apply the armbar anyway.

Rickson did teach it the same way as Pedro did to my instructor that has trained with Rickson at his house.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone. I may choose to edit my original post on this.

How does your instructor control the arm with his elbows on the mat? Just curious how this works. Thanks in advance

Yeah, so both arms are in right?

Yeah, so both arms are in right?

Yes both arms in. You can set up the arm in real fight when an opponent throws a straight right to your face from a postured position. You simply parry the punch and wrap your arm over his and place your left hand on his left trapezius muscle.....you then use the same armbar set up for the finish......

Well if they were the same age and it was a Vale-Tudo fight I would go with Rickson in a heart beat .......if a grappling match Rickson would destroy GSP even at his age

i dunno, i have difficulty seeing him take gsp down if he dosent want to do down, but hes not gona try and stand up with gsp either.

would be an interesting fight i think, but just a pipe dream probably.

So you grab the collar and sleeve, then shoulder walk back to stretch them out a bit, then hit the sweep? (just making sure I understand clearly). Thanks!

Yup. You just gotta watch the riming. You hit the sweep when their but goes past their own heels.

Cool, this is my favorite sweep and I'm always looking for new ways to hit it. Thanks for the tip!

In a Vale-Tudo match with no gloves, no rules and no time limit I think things would be a little different

Yeah I know if u shoot ur pelvis up into the armpit with feet biting and knees pinching, body straight with hip engaged then there is no way to pull ur arm out, u will need wrist control to finish though

If rickson was younger like 10 yrs then it is no question, but even now I choose rickson, u put those 2 on a beach and my moneys on rickson, u never bet against superior technique
