Rickson Gracie FAQ

I saw something about Rickson doing some Seminar's in CA. Anyone got some more info?

I think TrumpetDan said he was going to one of these, where's the review+breakdown of all the moves on YouTube.

I went. The seminar was three hours long. No sparring. Rickson showed his philosophies of invisible jiu jitsu as applicable to every move in jiu jitsu. He answered every question anyone had and asked the name of everyone who he demonstrated techniques on/with. He was very laid back and overall the day was awesome. I crossed an item off my bucket list. I'll write up a full breakdown if anyone's interested, but I'm traveling now and typing on my phone.

In short it was amazing and worth every penny.

Relson and Rickson were both gifted, Rorion not so much. They are all good, and consistent. How can they not be, when they were raised on the mat? But even in that environment some stood out more than others. Helio could never hide the disappointment he felt due to Rorion being an average player, especially when Rorion had a rivalry with Rolls, who sorely outmatched him despite the size difference.

Even though Helio loved Rolls very much, having raised him since a baby ( Rolls was Carlos's son, and as a grown up called both Helio and Carlos "dad"), he could never fully swallow his bitterness. This exploded when Rolls died. The big commotion afterwards prompted Helio to say something he would regret instantly, he said "Why is everyone calling him a champion? He wasn't a champion. Who did he fight?"

Rolls's wife replied in furious tears "I bet you are happy because now that the sun is gone, the little stars can shine".

ouch! :icon_cry2

Lies lies and all lies! I have completely ignored my wife since I came home from the seminar!

It may have something to do with me being invisible.

(the wife is knocked up and is sick 24/7. That has a little to do with it.)

lol...thanks

so how was the seminar on the 13th to anyone who went?? teamcarvalho??

plus i feel like bumpin this bad boy...thanks DK

Dude it was awesome to be there among other black belts including Xande Ribeiro, Leticia Ribeiro, Kid Peligro, Royler Gracie, and other top black belts. There must have been 20 of us black belts there.

Rickson went over basic moves but took it to another level. He would pick someone do a technique that he wanted to go over then show how to do it a better way with no effort or strength. I mean the man showed us how to take the back from the guard without using his arms. He held onto his belt and just did it. We then did it ourselves and it worked for most. I have been working on that one all day yesterday:icon_lol:

Now I know why he calls it Invisible Jiu-Jitsu because it is the subtle moves that you don't see that make them smooth. He said that you should not use strength or use a lot of wasteful movement to pull off a technique.

Someone asked about is breathing. He said breathing is very important when doing any type of exercise especially Jiu-Jitsu. He then showed us how does his breathing exercises. That is another thing I want to get down.

I have to say that his level of BJJ is higher than anyone I have seen. I mean I don't think any of the top competitors can touch him including Roger.

Oh by the way he showed the arm bar too.......you don't put your feet on the hip and turn your body like most do. He said a person can defend against it too easy. He simply lifts up and twist his hip placing one leg directly over the shoulder and the other leg high on the back near the shoulder blade.

He stressed keeping the hips up to prevent your opponent from bending the arm. If he is able to bend the arm then he can stack you and stop the arm bar. However if you keep your hips high he can not bend his arm therefore he can't stack you. You then just push against his back with the leg that is on the shoulder blade and throw your other leg over the head for the tap.

Thanks for description. I've amazed myself by actually being able to apply with success snippets of descriptions of Rickson's techniques from sherdog.

I'm actually afraid of going to a Rickson seminar. I'm afraid that if I do I will be killed and replaced by an alien creature who looks and sounds just like me except all it will say is...

"That Seminar Was Awesome. Anyone Who Has A Chance Must Go. The Experience Of A Life Time. Praise Rickson. Praise Rickson."

made me lol

I was told that Rickson only wants to teach black belts, and that he thinks teaching white belts etc is a waste of his time. I suppose this isn't true?

He teaches you if you pay the money he wants to see.
