Reyes thought he beaten Jones?

Jones didn't even understand how he won lol.

Watch the post fight interview. He's scrambling to understand what just happened, and starts to think he won squarely due to dominating the 5th round, and that he may have lost 1,2,3. Joe specifically asks him if he felt he was possibly behind on points from losing 1,2,3, heading into the 4th round, and Jon says "yeah...."
This line of thinking only makes sense if Jones retained the belt, via draw 47-47, with Jones scoring 10-8 in the 5th... Which did not happen.

One of the judges even scored it 4-1 for Jon, which is called out and discussed at length after Reyes is done talking. The announce team calls for this judge to lose his job lol.

The crowd raining downs boos was insane, as was the crowd cheering for Reyes when he was on the mic. It was obvious to the majority who won.

When your champ can't find the math needed to justify the win, thinks he may have lost the first three rounds, only sees a victory coming from a non-existent 10-8, the majority of fans felt Reyes won, the majority of MMA media outlets felt Reyes won, the majority of the arena that saw it live thought Reyes won, and you close the card out with the announce team calling for judges to be fired.... then maybe, just maybe Reyes actually won.

The fight was years ago, but after rewatching the whole fight again, nah I don't think Reyes beat Jones at all.

Reyes did good, frustrated Jones a lot but Reyes was fighting backward throughout the whole 5 rounds and he only won round 1 at best.
Round 2 and 3 were basically draw rounds at best.
The new round 4 and 5 were all Jones round, especially round 5 Jones was stalking Reyes and hunt him down while Reyes was fighting to survive.

Seriously people think a guy that trying to survive win a fight?
Why don't you learn how to score a fight and then come back and make another thread that's worth reading

I've seen this trend for a while now. We build dominant fighters too much in our minds to the point where they have a competitive fight with an unlikely contender everyone forgets all of the details of the fight. Happened with Shevchenko and Santos too. When you fight a person who's considered the G.O.A.T. you have nothing to lose and more to gain just by performing and exceeding expectations. All of the Reyes fans and bandwagoners who fueled Reyes' ego are now silent watching his career spiral into obscurity. Funny how things can turn so quickly for a fighter

he might have. jones was so inactive in that fight it was almost strange. i mean he had the guy hurt and he knew it. not sure what was going on in his head that night, or if it was something physical or what.

I still think Reyes won but have 0 complaints about the judges giving the fight to Jon. 3rd round was super close and 4 & 5 were for Jon. Reyes was absolutely EXHAUSTED. Very difficult fight for both.

Machida vs Shogun, Jones vs Reyes, Volk vs Islam, Max vs Volk 2 and so many fights that could have gone either way are perceived as “robberies” but to me they are NOT. Even if I had the other guy winning. At the end of the day, I truly believe that if you are the challenger you have to beat the champ soundly and the last thing you want is your fate to be decided by judges after a back and forth battle.

So what ?? Jones didnt do anythin since the reyes fight to get that shot. If he kept fighting he might be where reyes is at.

that is what I was saying, but people have to get hype for the Jones- Gane matchup and analyzing it from a perspective that Bones is still Bones… that they aren’t considering that it’s possible that Jon might be shot

Biggest difference between those two was cardio management. That is where Reyes lost. He probably thought he would put him out but that didn’t happen. Those last 2 rounds were especially hard to watch for Reyes.

At the time, I thought Reyes won
But it's one of those things where you can't believe somebody may have come that close to beating the unbeatable guy
I believe in my rewatch I had the last 3 narrowly for Jones? Can't remember. Reyes blew his wad
Kind of like gsp Hendricks and Jones Gus 1
Honestly Cruz garbrandt is in that category too despite Cody winning (rightfully). People act like he smoked dom but I wouldn't have been mad if dom got that decision

Gus Jones 1 wasn't even that close. It was competetive. But Jones clearly won 2 4 5.

This is the truth. People need to understand how these title fights are judged. I learned my lessons long ago when I bet against the champion and lose basically everytime when it goes to decision.

Pretty clear 3-2 for jones, though I thought Santos did beat Jones

Bruh
Did you watch it live? Half the world or more though Jones lost lol

Yes a bunch of emotional drunk men on the night were mystified that the invincible legend killer was getting hit and having his takedown's stuffed. But watch it again sober without the commentary. It's a pretty clear UD, Gus starts very strong and then it's just regular exchanges until Jones rallies.

But you're probably a Hooker or Masviadal fan so emotional vibes on the night mean everything to you, LOL.

That's a bit ridiculous. Yes, that trend happens, (I first started mentioning it with JDS-Stipe), but it's not the case here. I've never given a shit about Reyes and I don't understand the Santos uproar (a fight where I think that trend might actually apply) but Reyes 1, 2, 3 is just correct judging. He should have won the belt, then dropped it to Jan and we'd still have the same championship situation we have today. Only difference would be that Crash Bandicoot shaped fool would get to call himself a former champ, which is never gonna happen now, with a descent that would make Garbrandt blush

Rewatched the fight few days ago so this is how I had it. R1,4,5 are the easiest to score, 2 and 3 are fiercely debatable.

R1 - Reyes easily. Arguably the easiest round to score. 10-9 Reyes.

R2 - IMO, this is the closest round of the fight and where the fight was won/lost. Upon my first watch, I thought Reyes had it easily but upon the rewatch, it was quite surprising to see how much of his strikes barely landed. In particular, the first 2 mins where he had those flurry of strikes which Jon ran away from, actually missed and Jon displayed some fabulous head movement to defend those. Still, both landed some decent strikes but I think Jon landed slightly more effective shots than Reyes did. Overall, I scored this round for Bones but only by an asshair. 10-9 Jones. Having said that, this round is so damn close I wouldn't fault anyone for scoring it for Reyes.

R3 - Like R2, pretty close as well with both guys having their moments but Reyes wins this round thanks to the gorgeous uppercut he lands on Jones near the end of the round. He gets gassed towards the end but still landed some sweet body shots. 10-9 Reyes.

R4 - This round actually starts quite evenly but as it progresses, Reyes is clearly gassed and Jones really starts to impose his will on the game. Although Jon didn't land anything noteworthy, he got the takedown and continued to press the action. For what its worth, though neither guy really damaged the other, Jon did more so 10-9 Jones.

R5 - All Jones. Reyes is clearly tired at this point and Jones lands a few clean shots but nothing to damaging. Still 10-9 Jones.

Overall, Jones - 2,4,5. The second round is where it gets controversial but overall I think the other 4 rounds are pretty easy to score. Upon a rewatch, I am quite impressed at how good Jones' defense is although again that alone doesn't win you points. Still a great fight and a shame the discourse around this match is so toxic.

I score it 1,2,3 Reyes but that’s a nice post.

If you would score a round for one fighter by an asshair and recognize that its so damn close you wouldn't fault anyone scoring it for the opposite fighter, then why the fuck wouldn't you just score the round 10-10?
