Replacements fighters for the main event

It seems that Volkov is the substitute in case Cormier or Miocic were injured before the fight. I always thought that the main fight of the night should always have a replacement fighter ... What do you think?

I agree. All sports have a replacement athlete. They dont cancel the superbowl if tom brady sprains his ankle. They put someone else in.

It makes sense in theory, but the UFC doesn't want to pay fighters for nothing, and fighters don't want to go through a weight cut/ turn down potential fights for nothing.

It makes sense, of course, you get to save a main event.

They should have Gus on standby incase it's Stipe that gets injured. You get to keep your main event, make it a non-title and at HW since if Gus wins and DC doesn't retire they are just going to run it back anyways and you don't have to worry about them both making 205 last minute.

But Volkov/DC would do nothing for either fighter except maybe make DC look better if he were to win. Volkov is probably next in line at Stipe so that makes sense that he's told to be ready.

right- so you designate one of the other fighters in the same weight class already fighting on the card to be the replacement if one of the fighters in the main-event falls off.

I bet UFC would love to be able to stack every card with mostly fighters in the same weight class.
So, if one of the main eventers failed to make it to the fight, there is a larger selection of fighters who can be a replacement.
Unfortunately, it's difficult enough to even get fighters to take a match.

Imagine Khabib Vs Connor happens. There are so many things that could go wrong with all the shenanigans going on.
Perfect scenario is to put on the same card: -
Poirier Vs Alvarez
Gaetjhe Vs Iaquinta
James Vick Vs Paul Felder
Kevin Lee Vs Alexander Hernandez
Barboza Vs Chiesa

So, someone like Connor snorts himself into jail again. Loads of guys on the card would love to challenge Khabib (especially Kevin Lee).

Your idea is perfect. It would also be worth a fighter of the same weight category who will fight in the next event and who is already in a training camp ... There are several options

Always have another important fight from the same weight class on the main card
And book something on the prelims that's also in the same class

For example

Yoel vs rob

Weidman vs Branch

Vettori vs Breese


If the main event falls out replace Weidman into the ME
Put Breese against Branch

And only Vettori ends up out of pocket, so pay him anyway him being the cheapest

Since we all know the UFC are cheap
