Remember when Aoki flipped that guy a bird after breaking his arm and Sherdog defended him?

You guys remember when Shinya Aoki broke that one guy's arm and then stood over his body and flipped him a bird...in front of his family?

All the hardcores on Sherdog tried to defend his actions by saying he was mad at the guy for making him break his arm when he could have just tapped out instead.

I don't know why but I just randomly remembered this. It didn't dawn on me at the time but that's like the most bullshit excuse for someone being a dick I've ever heard.
I definitely didn't defend him. And tons of Sherdoggers were disgusted at his actions. I think he did it because the president of DREAM asked him to destroy Hirota. At least that is what he alleged. But I mean, Aoki's always been a jerk. I respect his skills but I basically never root for him because of that.

Those who watched it live didn't give a shit

That was an amazing ending to the DRAM-SENGOKU rivarly, everyone was buzzed from it. No one cared in the moment
Tons of people cared. Kawajiri-Yokota was great to me; both guys fought their hearts out, Kawajiri was relentless with his takedowns, took home a win but then showed tons of respect to Yokota, who returned the favor. That sort of attitude is one of the reasons I've always rooted for Kawajiri. That was a beautiful end to the Sengoku-DREAM rivalry; not the crap that Aoki pulled.

I guess what I meant to say was that no one that watched it live cared about Aoki's actions because the event itself was so epic that his actions just added to it

All the controversy came the morning after when all the news sites posted about it in Japan and Overseas.

But Aoki's actions perfectly complimented the energy of the event, especially if you watched Hirota's run in Sengoku and Aoki's run in DREAM at that time

The climax to their runs was excellent

I don't know how anyone, watching live that evening, who had followed the DREAM and Sengoku at that time, could have complained about what happened, Aoki destroying and direspecting Hirota seemed beautiful

That was an incredible fight card and I miss the days when Dream and other JMMA events aired on HDNet. But yeah Aoki doing that was a total dick move and I remember thinking the same when I saw it night of. I'm with @Kforcer in respecting his talents but never rooting for him because he just seems like a prick. Even his "apology" felt like Yuki Nakai just told him to "check on Hirota and make some fans." Apparently Nakai dismissed him as an instructor at Paraestra due to his poor sportsmanship that night.

this is not how i remember the reaction to the event being. i went and looked for threads from that time period and could only find this one:

https://forums.sherdog.com/threads/...s-for-sportsmanship-at-dynamite-2009.1125016/

a good mix of people who defend his behavior and those who were disgusted.

i bet 99% of anyone who's calling people pussies for not wanting this type of behavior in mma dont train. actually i bet they probably dont even exercise.

Anyone remember the absolute beautiful result when he fought that guy in a mixed ruled match

It was kickboxing the first round and then a round with MMA rules. During the kickboxing rounds, Aoki kept flopping to his back over and over and just did whatever he could do to avoid engagement

Second round starts and Aoki runs over and immediately shoots for a double and his opponent knew what was coming and threw a huge knee and KTFO Aoki. So satisfying

lol
also so satisfying seeing someone with a worst haircut than i

Aoki will rightly be remembered, criticized or praised for this event, but the passage of time does offer us some additional perspective and therefore context. Hirota was a fool for not tapping, and he changed the trajectory of his career substantially due to this choice. He was out for over 20 months in total. Pre-fight, he was the Sengoku champion and his cross promotional bout against Dream champion Aoki was hotly anticipated, with a riotous crowd on the night (by Japanese standards). There was of course the standard MMA war of words pre fight, which Aoki always takes to heart because he is a true psychopath. Additionally, as has been mentioned already, Hirota had defeated Aoki’s best friend and training partner. Well, defeated is kind. He actually beat the shit out Of Kitaoka and took his Sengoku belt. Easily shucking off Kitaoka’s sub attempts gave him confidence to claim he was not scared of Aoki’s equally weak submission game. In their fight, Hirota came to immediately regret this decision. His break was so severe that his surgery was performed by the same Doctor that repaired Jerome Lebannners forearm after he famously shattered it against Ernesto Hoost (the ref ignored the break and allowed the fight to continue until reaching the knockdown limit) however, attempted returns to light training were quickly aborted due to the high potential for further aggravation and damage. Not to be discouraged, Hirota decided to leave his longtime Gym, Gutsman Dojo with another Sengoku standout to form Cave……which then resulted in him injuring his repaired arm and further delaying his return to MMA. Sengoku never stripped him, but he ended up vacating the belt due to his sustained absence from the promotion. When he WAS finally ready to return, Sengoku had folded….and Aoki had rattled off 6 wins across the largest promotions outside of the UFC in strikeforce, bellator and Dream. Hirota, a respected champion before his injury, was left to feed on opponents in DEEP. Obviously, this was not the end for Hirota, and he made his short run in the UFC….but had he tapped that night against Aoki, his career would look dramatically different from today

was gonna ask the injury question and see u already answered. Thanks for the good info mr. No paragraphs.

Well, I was absolutely following both. In fact, I wasn't even close to being a fan of Hirota. As a guy who loved leglocks and catch-wrestling and Minoru Suzuki, I was a huge fan of Satoru Kitaoka. He was a guy I'd actually study, who I learned a lot from. So I was pretty annoyed when Hirota beat him. And I just never liked Hirota's style of fighting; it was too much striking and takedown defense for me. Nothing against it, just not a fan.

But that doesn't change that Aoki's actions against him were absolutely disgusting. And that's how I felt and the time as well. There was nothing beautiful about it. One of the things I always loved about Japanese MMA was the character and class that people like Sakuraba, Funaki, Kawajiri, Minowa, Uno, Tokoro, etc. tended to show their opponents. Kawajiri's embrace of Yokota was far more epic to me than someone breaking a guys arm and then flicking off the crowd. Plenty of people were disgusted and horrified by Aoki's actions. I actually know a Japanese jazz singer whose favorite fighter was Hirota; I'm sure she wasn't happy about it.

You might have thought it was awesome at the time. I definitely didn't and I was definitely following Japanese MMA very closely.

Aoki flipping his injured opponent off did look odd considering he was the least americanized MMA fighter from Japan. Aoki actually saw Bibiano Fernandez doing it 2 months prior to the hirota fight and he mimicked what he did. The following year, a YouTube video in which Noboru Asahi is seen flicking off a Shooto official went viral. (They're Japanese and they wouldn't have the courage to break rules until one guy blazed a trail for the rest to follow suit. )

Manhoef, in the same event, defeated misaki by stoppage which was way too early, much earlier than when kid TKOd sudo, another controversial stoppage in the historical fight. The referee didn't want to stop but he was being psychologically controlled by tamura who gave him a furious warning for the late stoppage 3 years prior to misaki vs manhoef. Tamura had to use soccerball kick to Minowa's head to finish the fight because this referee didn't step in when Minowa was unable to continue. After the bell, raged tamura charged at him, pushed him around and berated the young referee as if he was making an example for the entire staff and crews. Without this incident, I'm sure misaki didn't get stopped and probably won by decision to make sengoku the winner.

The funniest moment from this event I remember was from the pre-fight conference. Yokota is known for his endless rambling once he grabs a microphone. He was in manic mood on this occasion as well and he went on and on to criticize his opponent.

Yokota ”How did he even get the chance to fight Masato with such horrible standup skills? Come on those guys should know kawajiri sucks. If I were him....”

Aoki ”Cut it out, buddy. You've done enough talking, getting on everyone's nerves.”

Yokota (in a hardly audible voice) ”you shut up. Let me finish my sentence.”

Gono commented ”as a defender of my fellow colleague Yokota, let me say I agree 100% with Aoki”.

Aoki is extreme on both ends. He can be be a savage bully or balling his eyes outs.

I watched him eating that mixed rules knee live and it was very satisfying. I do appreciate Aoki, that was just fantastic after all his antics.

I was at that event. I remember Overeem kneeing Fujita’s head into orbit.
