Relatively new fan here, idk much about Fedor so...

Both statements are true...he was a great fighter and his competition was a little lackluster. But when you combine his accomplishments and competition he is indeed the HW GOAT.

I mean he doesn't have shit on Anderson but he's still pretty good.

I'll never forget the suplex he took from Randleman before hitting a sweet kimura. That was the day Fedor was the biggest badass in the world, to me.

werdum opened up as +700 underdog and closed somewhere +530 vs fedor.. and fans aren't stupid. it was ronda/holly type of upset. and fedor was winning that fight (unlike ronda) until he got caught.

I was blinded with the fandom. There has never been any other favorite whom I considered unbeatable. It was a legitimate shock to me. I went out and got drunk after the fight :D

I had tears in my eyes. No joke.

It was nothing like Ronda Holly. Many serious fans and a number of analysts knew Ronda had nothing for Holly and the fight played out as expected.

Ronda is the product of media hype. Fedor achieved monolithic stature within the sport despite virtually no media hype.

Fedor'a loss was universally shocking (although less so in retrospect).

Thanks to Fedor i became a fan of MMA. During his prime he was awesome to watch

Great fighter, fought and beat many of the biggest names of the time. He also beat a lot of cans, but that's just how it was, in PRIDE. one minute, you're fighting a geriatric pro-wrestler, the next, Mirko Cro-Cop.

Yes... but sometimes you're fighting 5 times a year. Glorious times!

Was he truly great, or was it that, at the time, the level of competition was very low and well-rounded fighters were absent?

What made Fedor that great was the fact, that he beat his opponents at their strength instead of exploiting their weakness like they do today.

The only time I saw Fedor throw a high kick was against (prime) CC, when he fought Big Nog he constantly jumped in his guard and so on...

The one thing you can't feel anymore is the aura he had. It's like he was the real world Chuck Norris. It was unthinkable to suggest that any man could defeat him.
So he was indeed that great

I don't like Fedor, all I have to say is you can't shit on someone's competition if they didn't lose to them.

He was great because of his strong mentality. He remained calm always, like a cold killer, but was also the toughest ever. Hit like a truck. Could submit guys. And he beat like 9 ex ufc champions or something like that.

I recommend watching all his fights. And watch chronicles of fedor.

He definitely deserves goat status. Ppl will always hate though but go look for yourself.

Yea he was.

Plus you need to understand that was the MMA world had to offer yea some freak fights and lesser opponents but some of the best fighters also.. guys that can easily wreck shit in today's "modern" MMA world hell some of them old dogs still do just to put it into perspective.

he was the best heavyweight of his era but big nog and cro cop both had deficiencies that fedor could exploit. if he faced a bigger more powerful heavyweight with good wrestling that would be a tougher matchup

Yes, he was truly great.

I know now it doesn't mean much to those that didn't get to see them in their primes, but he had no problem beating fighter at their strenght. Standing with strikers, or getting in the guard of BJJ specialists.

Got in their opponents minds without the taunting or trashtalk, that should tell you something.

Plenty of those Pride fighterz came over to the UFC & did very well... so you can't really say the competition waz slack.

I've heard the Steroid card thrown out there... & that's possible & probable... but likely they all were doing it... so the cream still rose to the top.

All said, you can't discount Fedor.

You are on Sherdog, so you know about the internet.
Do I have to tell you, you can watch his fights on the internet and make up your own mind ?

No HW has ever had even close to a streak he had. A small HW never losing against giant killers, for 9 years? scandalous. Never will happen again.

... and the level of competition was very low as well. He had to be talented in the first place for them to want to find people for him to beat up, but some of the people they found weren't worthy of being in the ring. He should have bit the bullet and come to the UFC in 2010 with everyone else, but because he didn't there will always be a debate.

he beat every great hw of his era except for couture and barnett and he tried to fight them too,so shut your hole.
