When I watched the fight I honestly thought something seemed off with Miesha.
TLDR: Just a breakdown off all of the signs/tells that it was going to be a bad night for Miesha. Also mentioned some stylistic challenges that we perhaps overlooked prior to UFC 200 (perhaps looking past Nunes).
The Weigh-In debacle:
Firstly who in the blue hell turns up with seconds to spare, to barely make weight in their first title defense?
Which happens to just be the main event of the biggest MMA event of all time, which you are guaranteed to make the most money of your career in - that in itself was an amateur mistake and worrying.
The shaky looking ring walk:
She then didn't seem very confident during the ring-walk, didn't seem to be taking in the moment at all. She has very up-beat and fun entrance music, but it was just a walk of negativity, you could see the contrast.
Then when she was in the Octagon she did this weird kind of screech, like she was trying to wake herself up. At that stage it was very obvious she was off, and she wasn't her usual self.
Simply ran into a bad match-up?
Personally I think Tate's striking, especially boxing has come a long way since the 2nd encounter with Ronda.
I also want to state that I don't think she's all that great in that facet, even at this stage.
She looked good against people who are very tentative (Eye) or very lacking in that area (McMann).
She looked helpless against Holm, but Holly was so worried about a TD after Round 2's action that she was playing it very safe.
Tate looked lethargic and almost lazy with her output. Her takedown attempt was decent, but her attempt at holding on was half-hearted. Her striking was essentially non-existent, and without watching the fight again and again, I don't remember her landing a clean shot on Amanda.
Quit in the choke?
She definitely "quit" so to speak. It was not a feeling of suffocation from neck compression, it was probably the realization that her nose was badly broken, a lack of vision and just wanting out at that stage.
Should we have seen this coming?
Tate has issues with really good strikers who blast her with all they have (Zingano).
Miesha has great heart and very good chin, but people act like she is indestructible.
It takes a lot to get Tate out of there I will say that, and she won't quit to joint-locks when she sees a route out or she doesn't chicken out when she's head-kicked, which is extremely commendable!
... BUT it's been shown that if you're technical enough to continually find your mark and you are willing to empty the tank, Tate can wilt.
My Verdict:
Combination of 3 factors.
1. Poor preparation e.g. weigh cut.
2. Nunes being a bad match-up for her, proven that her style can beat Miesha before (Zingano fight).
3. Overconfidence.
Everyone's focus was on Tate vs Rousey 3 or Tate vs Holm 2... HELL, there was even outside talk of Tate vs Cyborg or a Tate vs Zingano 2 fight. Nunes was talked of like a stepping stone, complacency catches up motherfucker, trust me!
