News RE: RIZIN NYE/10 Year Anniversary Event

I'd also mention Motoya vs Akimoto.

Motoya has been a UFC level fighter his entire career, beating many UFC vets in Japan (Scoggins, Bontorin, and Nascimento.) He's now 35, and will probably never see the UFC, but he's really the ultimate JMMA gatekeeper -- and one of the more underrated fighters in MMA history.

He's fighting 18 year old undefeated 7-0 Kyoma Akimoto, who has looked great to date.

Rizin.tv states that the winner of this fight will determine the challenger to fight Naoki Inoue next for the Rizin bantamweight title.

Giant step up in competition for Akimoto. I don't really like it. The kid is only 18, and if he does manage to beat motoya, he'll be thrown in there with killers like horiguchi probably before he is even 20 years old.

They tend to do this with fighters they wanna hype, put them in with fighters who obviously have the edge, but it endears the young fighter to the Japanese crowd when he loses, for whatever reason. They love a good redemption arc.

On the preliminary portion we have Baby Sakuraba (yes, Kazushi's son) making his MMA debut against JMMA stalwart Yusuke Yachi, who has over 40 fights under his belt.

Its an easy way to set up a trilogy.

Last time I watched was when Jiri fought King Mo. But this year I'm tuning in for sure as I'm off on the 1st and the 2nd.

Good shit @Bobby Boulders
This will actually be happening on the evening of the 30th, tomorrow, and running until morning/brunch time on NYE, if you're in the States. But if you've got business on Tuesday, don't let it deter you from watching later. This is as good an event as they've put together in a while, and their matchmaking is top notch.

This is a clear

I remember the last Japanese NYE event I watched was Dream, 2010 or something around that time. It was at least 9 hours long.

This one is looking like it will be about 11 hours. They tend to time it so that it ends right around 12am in Japan, which would be 10am EST in the States. It starts at 11pm EST. Gonna be a long night, I've loaded up with sugary drinks with very high caffeine content, in hopes that I can make it.

@Bobby Boulders
So why did Ryan drop out? And why was it expected?
He says he injured his wrist, but I suspect it was feedback with regards to them wanting to put that part of the event on a completely different platform, and charge like $50 for it. No one was going to pay for it, I am a RIZIN diehard and no way in hell was paying for that. I expected it would have been cocaine, though.

Thanks for the info. Yeah they are probably paying Ryan a lot of money so they probably needed to charge way more for his portion of the fight. I guess Ryan figured he’s not actually gonna make much on top of his original purse since no one buying the ppv

I approve of the $20 price point, I might actually pay for a PPV here unlike with the UFC where I've never done so

The only issue is the timing, I remember that these Japanese events can sometimes be starting at midnight and going until 6 AM or something like that
