Movies Rate and Discuss the Last Movie You Saw v.16

Almost done watching 3.5 hr Rebel Moon Pt 1 Director's Cut in one sitting. Way too violent and gory. Seems too disturbing and not likely to rewatch except for... The first naked woman had very decent boobs. The story seems very similar to Star Wars A New Hope and some characters look like they came from Episode I. I read the creator was very ambitious wanting this to be a new Star Wars franchise with video games, and actually has action figures, Funko Pops already. I guess I'll watch the Pt 2 later.

I think Ngannou was in this briefly in the gladiator stadium scene with speaking role.

Hollow man (2000)

It starts well enough. Bacon, Shue and Brolin have an interesting drama/love triangle between them that helps set up some personal stakes before Bacon turns invisible.

The obvious problem with the movie is how quick things go awry with Bacon's character. He basically goes crazy and starts doing creepy shit right away. I mean right away, without any bridge to give the invisibility time to settle and make his characters turn feel more natural.

Now, there is the idea that maybe he was always like that...a psychopath who ended up getting the power to be invisible. It is also open ended (at times) as to what he is actually doing and what other characters are just imagining him doing. It makes for some interesting psychological elements, but it's hard to take Bacon and everything seriously enough and the film isn't amusing enough to make it all work as a satire.

It does pick up toward the end and becomes fun. I guess. Maybe Hollow man was better left to memory.

5.4/10 range.

Hellraiser (1987) 7/10

It's a classic, no doubt. Is it a good film? Probably not. It's pretty bad. I don't know, it's hard to rate. Prime Ashley Laurence makes it worth the watch though.

I find with a lot of these 80s horrors from my childhood, that when I rewatch them they're quite naff and most of my enjoyment comes sheerly from the nostalgia factor.

Carved--3/10
This is a poorly made horror movie on Hulu with an absurd plot. A chemical spill causes a small towns harvest festival to be attacked by a mutant pumpkin. This pumpkin wants revenge for people carving Jack-O-Lanterns. It was billed as comedy horror, but the comedy was nonexistent, and because of that it was just too serious and stupid. I usually like stupid horror but this was just stupid.

Skyfall (UK, 2012)

James Bond spy fim directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Judi Dench.

Bond finds himself pulled back into service to face off against his perverse doppelgänger, a former OO agent now bent on revenge against M.

I love the Craig Bond films and I view them collectively as the highlights of the franchise. I cannot decide if Casino Royal or Skyfall is the best of the bunch. The Bond era that you prefer is completely subjective as is your view of what a real Bond film is supposed to be.

Bardem is a great villain because he so deftly represents a distorted version of Bond himself. Bardem is a blonde in this film to drive home this point. Both men are killers with a profound sense of loyalty to a bureaucracy that views them as entirely disposable. He was a great agent and one of M's "favourites" until suddenly he wasn't and found himself being tortured for months on end in a Chinese prison. That part he could live with it. Being sent there by M was intolerable. M justifies her decision based on Bardem "going beyond his brief". Bond does that in every film. Bond is a man who was disposed of but comes back to serve. Bardem is a man who was disposed of and comes back for revenge.

Oddly, the main difference in the characters comes down to their ability to love. Bond was betrayed by his two loves - Vesper and M - but ultimately retains an element of humanity and the capacity to forgive.

Roger Deakins' cinematography is exquisite. Silhouetted against Shanghai’s neon glow or standing like a ghost at the ruins of his childhood estate, Bond is portrayed as both timeless and visibly marked by the ravages of time. The action scenes are great and the decision to make the final showdown oddly intimate was genius.

Bond films are always a bit silly. They are action films, after all. Nevertheless, Bond being an actual character who grows and changes is the great innovation of the Craig years. Although, to be fair, some fans probably view this as a bug and not a feature.

Rating: 9/10

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989) 4/10

This one is rough. Taking the whole "Nightmare" element out of the series was an incredibly dumb move. I have to say some of the set pieces and practical effects are surprisingly well done but that's about the only positive here. I also got confused as to whether the kid was really Freddy's or the boyfriends or whether... who cares. Watch 3 instead. It's like The Shawshank Redemption compared to this one.

Deep blue sea (1999)

This one made it onto my Halloween list, even though I'm not sure if it counts. I haven't seen it since it came out, but it did have a few scenes that stayed with me.

Despite some shoddy cgi and questionable physics and science, Deep Blue Sea just works. It is hard to really explain why. Maybe it is some nostalgia for that millennium transition era of films. Or maybe because it is just a lot of fun. If you go into DBS expecting too cool characters saying too cool shit fighting genius sharks.....you're in.

And the cast? Thomas Jane is great as the antihero badass who also is an animal expert. And Saffron Burrows is the sexy scientist using the animals for her own scientific gain.

Michael Rappaport is alright in it.

And Of Course you have Samuel L Jackson who is in one of the best and memorable moments of the era in film. Even if you haven't seen Deep Blue Sea, you probably know the scene I mean.

But to me the movie MVP is LL Cool J. What starts as seemingly a throwaway character turns into perhaps the best. Somewhat inspiring and somewhat comedic relief, it's hard to imagine this movie without him.

Overall deep blue see is dumb 90s popcorn done right. A nice short ride that delivers what it promises but also has a few surprises along the way.

B movie that totally embraces being a B movie and is a ton of fun as a result

Watched Terrifier 3 in the Cinema yesterday, if you love the ridiculous slasher energy from the second movie you gonna love the third.

I have been watching gory movies since I was young but even I was like "this is a bit much lol" at times but it was also kept in the same ridiculous energy as before so I actually laughed at scenes I probably should not laugh at.

I am pretty sure that I will never watch any of these films but I am captivated by how successful they have been. Really small studio that makes them too. It is a franchise now. Amazing.

The Director even rejected offers from bigger studios because they would want to cut out certain parts of the movie. It is not for the faint of heart, I think the second broke the record for most fake blood and I am pretty sure the third broke that record again. It is the highest grossing unrated film of all time which is insane to think about.

I would not recommend the movie to squeamish people or people who can't handle seeing blood or extreme gore. There was a scene in the movie some women walked out on, which I get but the scene was at the same time so ridiculous that I couldn't help but chuckle. (Pretty sure the people sitting beside me thought I was a loonie lol).

I prefer the first movie over the second tbh. I think some of the cool atmospheric horror stuff it does gets overlooked by the gore.

I still liked the second though and heard mostly good stuff about 3.

I think the second might have a harder time conveying its story, because they added a ton of lore to this franchise in that one. The final girl and all the mythical stuff. The first one was way more gruesome not necessarily because of the amount of gore and blood but rather because there was no glimpse of hope or weakness to the villain. The third might be the best so far imo, but I have yet to watch all hallows eve so I cant really comment on that one.

It kind of reminds me of the early Nightmare on elm street movies, just has that feel of gore and a grotesque but somehow charming villain. Did not think the third movie would be this successful but even in my small city in Germany early showings were completely booked.

i think the first one is a legit bad movie. it kinda fuckin’ sucks & looks like shit
Really? It is obviously not an all time great movie but I thought it encapsulated the chaotic nature of Art the clown. I personally think the third is my favourite although the second was not far behind. I think the director and studio did not think it would be as successful as it was which is why the first movie was a bit more low effort than the other two.

It is a low budget Horror and I think it did its job. I personally would not say the first movie was a standout from all the other horror movies released that year like The Wailing, Train to Busan, Green room or my personal favourite of that Year Neon Demon. But saying its a bad movie seems a bit harsh.

On another note I watched "Don't Move" on Netflix this week as well, which was a very cool concept for a Horror movie. Not gonna spoil anything but it really conveys that feeling of helplessness in a dangerous situation. Don't go in expecting some intricate story line that spans over hours, since the movie is only 92 minutes long. I think that short runtime is fitting for this movie tho and they did a great job of not having too many empty space( I do not know how to call it, basically parts of the movie that seem overtly unnecessary).

7/10 great innovative horror movie.

30 days of night (2007)

I think it was decent but had potential to be better than it was. The comic book look and feel of the move works, the cast and acting works, but there is something sluggish about the first half especially and the story isnt as well done as the visuals.

Ben Foster is fantastic in the small part he has, Danny Huston does very well as the head vampire too. The vampires themselves in this movie are fairly well done but to be honest at times their attitude was a little too "cool for teenagers" for my taste.

I thought Hartnett did very well in the lead. Not that the character asks much of him but I bought him as a young duty-called sheriff of nowhere alaska.

The ending/finale is kinda goofy imo.

6.2/10 range maybe.

Yeah Jeepers Creepers falls into that OP villain thing too. I always thought the creeper was influenced by freddy

I watched a video on Jeepers Creepers not too long ago, that explained what inspired the movie.
But the creepiest thing about that movie is the director, look into it but be warned that guy is the real creeper lol.

I think the figure itself is based on a real life killer actually. But Jeepers Creepers is probably the most disappointing franchise I know of, because the first movie was so good I was scared shitless for weeks as a boy after watching it. The second one was okay but nothing compared to the first and all the others afterwards were just really meh.
