Movies Rate and Discuss the Last Movie You Saw v.16

I like most of the Halloween movies even the bad ones lol, 4 is great and has a nice creepy atmosphere especially in the house. I can look over the way Michael looks now, back in the day it bothered me.

5 is rough, hearing that the director said multiple times that he needed his ideas in and the next director could figure it out in 6 shows with its poor quality.

Curse is a huge guilty pleasure, the random rock music, Paul Rudd overacting multiple times, Michael is at his most brutal up to this 6th movie and he's angrily killing off anyone and everyone. This one is top 3 for me when it comes to Halloween movies I rewatch the most often over the last few years.

I agree overall.

5 is strange but I think it a lot of the atmosphere of 4 carries over well enough. Plus you get some good scenes like

his escape after 4's ending and the laundry chute scene

plus goat Halloween character Dr Loomis.

Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) 7.5/10

One of the better films in the franchise. The story is cohesive enough that you really don't even need to watch the first two to understand what's going on. It's a little less "cheesy" than some of the others and focuses more on the horror aspect which is a plus. Add in Laurence Fishburne and you got a winner.

Deadpool & Wolverine (USA, 2024). Delivered on exactly what I expected from a Deadpool movie. Lots of fun. 7.5/10

Chameleon Street
(USA, 1989). American independent that was famously unable to get distribution despite winning Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Based on the true story of William Douglas Street Jr., a black man who impersonated a reporter, a doctor, a French exchange student, and a lawyer over his conman career. He seems to have been caught every time and so I am going to say that he was good, not great, as his chosen vocation. The film is completely amateurish. It is now considered a hidden masterpiece that illustrates how black men are excluded from white spaces. Maybe, but I did not enjoy the film much. Rating: 4/10

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person
(Canada, 2023). Sasha, a Quebec based vampire, has an aversion to killing humans for blood based on the terrible experience of watching her family murder her birthday clown when she was young. She is now a 68 year old teenager who refuses to "hunt" and relies on her family to supply her with blood. They are exasperated with her attitude and force her to live on her own (well, with a cousin). Sasha becomes friends with Paul, a suicidal teenager who offers himself up as her first human meal. The film is a black comedy based on the premise but all the actors play it as drama. It is a delightful coming of age movie. Originally titled "The Vampire and Her Twink". Rating: 7/10

I watched this over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I agree with the 7/10 rating.

Odd coincidence that both of us came across this little gem at the same time.

I had never heard to it. I just saw the tile on a streamer and decided to take a chance.

I have never seen any of the Friday the 13th films either.

I have never been into slashers.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the advice from you and @mb23100 . Maybe I need to check them out
The Friday the 13th movies are fun, but bad. Halloween is an all time great, in a class of its own. Captures the era, and Jamie Lee Curtis is great. Soundtrack is spooky as hell.

Apartment 7A—-6/10
A serviceable but unoriginal horror thriller about a woman who comes to NYC to make it on Broadway. She is taken in by a nice older couple and weird things begin to occur. This movie serves as a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby. It really has some opportunities, but the director doesn’t do a great job building much tension Or scares. We have seen all of this before, and most often we have seen it done better. But worth a watch.great turns by Diane Wiest and Julia Garner.

yeah it’s pretty incredible just how good Halloween is. And it’s pretty glaring, once you do a rewatch, how much the rest of the franchise pales in comparison. Even Halloween 2 and Season of the Witch, which are, in my opinion, good. Same goes for Halloween 4 and H20.

I think there are some notable efforts and I’d rather have that as a horror franchise than it not exist but there’s no doubt in my mind that, much like Alien and Aliens, Terminator and T2, there is never going to be any iteration of that franchise that lives up to the quality of the original entry (entries).

Saturday Night was really good but it wasn't what I expected, I thought it was the story of the creation of Saturday Night Live and how it rose to prominence in that first season but it was actually a minute by minute retelling of the 90 minutes leading up to the very first show on October 11, 1975 and all the chaos, drama and insanity that surrounded the debut that night, although they managed to pack a whole lot of extra into that 90 minutes because the story is mostly true but everything that they show didnt actually all happen in the last couple hours before showtime

They did a really good job with the casting and hair/makeup because you could tell instantly who everyone was the moment they appeared on screen, usually in these kinda movies they'll show the persons name under them the first time you see them so you can keep track of who everyone is but there was no need to here because you instantly recognized Andy Kaufman, Billy Crystal, Jane Curtin, etc. as soon as they popped up

All the actors were solid, the guy playing Jon Belushi was just as unlikable as the real Jon Belushi, but JK Simmons was great as Milton Berle, he was the best imo

For us old school rasslin fans, it was interesting to see Dick Ebersol portrayed as a young nervous brown noser since we mostly know him as the big cheese who created Saturday Nights Main Event, the Royal Rumble and played a huge role in teaching Vince McMahon all about glitzy glamorous television production

Longtime fans of SNL will notice all kinds of Easter eggs and references to those first couple seasons of the show

It was a really fun rollercoaster ride as the clock kept ticking down to air time and they were still building sets, writing the show, trying to find the drugged out actors and even get the final approval from NBC to actually allow the show to air, it was a pretty exhilarating last few minutes that you couldnt help but get wrapped up in and lean on the edge of your seat, even though you kinda already knew the finish

If youre a fan of the early days of SNL or enjoy learning about the backstage nuts and bolts of live event production like ole Pete does then I suspect you will enjoy this one

6.2 Thumbs Up Outta 7

Would be a perfect 7 Thumbs Up if I didnt dislike Jon Belushi so much

Caddo Lake - 8.5/10

Movie was getting a lot of hype on Max, so checked it out tonight going in blind and just reading the synapsis which mentioned a missing girl and a families troubled past.

Super great movie. There was a few plot points that I guessed, but didn't see the full ending coming. Watched the trailer after the movie and it gave away to much. Was going to post it to hype the movie, but don't want to spoil it for anyone interested.

Kinds of Kindness (USA, 2024)

Yorgos Lanthimos film that stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and Hong Chau. I am not sure how to categorize the film; black comedy, absurdist, or surreal are places to start.

The film is composed of three distinct parts, all of which have the same actors playing different characters (the character "RMF" may be the same person in each part, I am not sure) in different stories. The three parts are united by a pervasive sense of existential dread and moral ambiguity. The film delves into themes of isolation, human cruelty, and social structures.

The film marks Lanthimos's return to the dark and twisted style reminiscent of his earlier works like Dogtooth and The Lobster. He is a master of creating atmosphere and that is on full display in this film.

I am not sure what the film, or any of the three parts, are supposed to mean. It feels like Lanthimos is being purposively obscure. That being said, the opening lyrics of Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics) sums up the main themes:

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something...

Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused

The film is filled with talent and the performances are great. Plemons stood out. He has an odd, awkward passivity that is perfect for this film.

This is probably a love it or hate it type of film. It is long (2:46), weird, tense, and ambiguous. I really liked it.

Rating: 7.5/10
