Another Round (2020)

-

It is pretty interesting what this film was able to get away with. Sure, there have been plenty of films that deal with the positive side of alchohol consumption. But those are usually teen or party comedies. This one does it with an extra aspect of drama and maturity mixed in. Especially with Madds Mikkelsen and his mid life crisis state of depression.

So there is a point in this film where you might think the transition from the comedy part to the dramatic part is complete, and we are going to start dealing with the consequences and dangers of the excess consumption of alchohol and the dangers of drinking culture.

And don't get me wrong, we absolutely do. The film can get very serious and somber, especially toward the end. But I have to say, I was pretty surprised how certain story arcs played out and concluded.

Apparently there is an american remake being developed with Leo Dicaprio. But I'm wondering if it will have the balls to approach the subject matter and tone in the same way.

Overall, if you havent seen it and you enjoy black comedies, I highly recommend it. It is a well acted, well done film that gets the dramatic and emotional elements done right, but isnt afraid to embrace the immaturity and fun of it all.

Madds is MVP.

not only is this movie fantastic, walking that very fine, & very Danish, line between humor & melancholy, but it also has one of the GOAT dance numbers in a movie

Yeah he killed it. Different side of Mikkelsen I'm used to seeing on screen in American cinema.

have you seen The Hunt? same director/actor(s) collab w/ Vinterberg & Mikkelsen + Bo Larsen. one of my rare 5/5s (Vinterberg actually has two, because Festen is also a 5/5)

No but it's been on my list for a while. Similar to "ready or not" with samara weaving right?

Malevolent -6.5/10
A decent horror about a brother and sister who fake "cleansing houses" of spirits for money. Of course they start to really see and find spirits. Worth a watch, Florence Pugh looks cute. I am pretty sure I already saw this a few years ago, but my memory isn't what it used to be lol.

Anatomy of a fall - 9
I'll be surprised if it doesn't win screenplay and Sandra Huller has had a all star year between this in zone of interest.
If you're thinking of marriage maybe skip this flick

Thanks, I'll add it to the list
coolcoolcool. if you liked Another Round, i can’t imagine you won’t love The Hunt. should note that it has absolutely none of the humor of Another Round. Vinterberg goes all in on the super intense human drama.

Hüller is legit unreal. her performance in Toni Erdmann is one of the best this century imo

Crossroads (1986)

it was good. Ralph Macchio and Joe Seneca make a good team as they go on this bluesy adventure.

Basic thoughts....I think Macchio gets a bit too familiar with Seneca too early. One second hes tracked him down like a crazed stalker sherlock holmes and next thing you know hes already sick of him as if they've been hanging out for years and honestly I wish he got punched a few times cause macchio was getting a bit too fresh.

Then again you get the sense Seneca would drop him at any point anyway. And despite that little bump the rapport building and friendship/mentor/student aspect of the film ends up working well.

there is one specific scene that I think shouldve been cut differently. One of those moments where it was a battle to go with show or tell, but they forgot about suggest and imply. Whatever overall the movie makes it work by the end of that subplot.

the ending/finale was very fun. Wondering if tenacious d were influenced by this for "Tribute". Also wondering if this movie is exactly like Green Book. Also a little hard to believe Steve Vai would mess up the part he did.

Saltburn

My wife and I watched this on Monday or Tuesday night after scrolling through what Prime had available. Kind of an odd film. I’ve read it described as the Talented Mr. Ripley for Gen Z. Probably a fair way of describing it, I guess. That being said, the movie (somewhat arbitrarily I might add imo) supposedly takes place in 2006 so that’s not Gen Z, but at the same time you wouldn’t really know it’s supposed to take place in 2006, at least I didn’t notice anything period specific about it.

I haven’t watched the Talented Mr Ripley in well over 20 years, but I’m fairly sure that Saltburn is probably an inferior movie. I also feel like people wouldn’t be talking much about this if it weren’t for all the sexually deviant scenes that serve no real purpose other than to shock the audience I guess.

The last 7 minutes or so I think is unnecessary and takes away most of the intrigue I think.

Interesting but simultaneously overrated I’d say.

Wild America Special: The Predators (2000)

A documentary with a narration by Marty Stouffer and Robert Redford. Welcome to the United States wilderness and waterway ecosystems. Home to predators like the bobcat, grizzly bear, river otter, wolf, Florida panther, and cougar. A predator will kill to simply consume food and survive. I recommend the documentary

KNIGHT AND DAY (2010)

It always slips my mind that James Mangold directed this moderately decent hit with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. He is good with serious stuff with pathos... Cop Land, Ford v. Ferrari, Logan, etc. So it's maybe not the best use of his time to do whimsical stuff like this or Indiana Jones 5. But anyway...I think the tone this goes for is about the same as True Lies. It's not as good as True Lies but it's not bad. Kind of like a Mission Impossible movie - Tom Cruise basically plays Ethan Hunt here anyway - where there is really no risk of anything really bad happening to any of the good guys. It's competent, it's a decent time, and you might forget you watched it within two weeks.

yeah I enjoyed it. Definitely meanders a bit somewhere in the middle I’d say but it’s reasonably entertaining. Light and watchable.

The scene that really stuck with me is probably when Diaz is confiding in her buddy Marc Blucas at the diner and Cruise comes over. Cameron, shocked, points out that Cruise is the man she was talking about- “this is the guy.”

And then Cruise with quintessential Cruise-like delivery smiles and shrugs at Blucas “I’m the guy…”

Something about the construction of that scene and Cruise’s delivery is really amusing to me.

Yeah that was actually a good scene. The guy wants to hate Tom Cruise right out of the gate as competition for the girl but Cruise wins him over by being interested in firefighting.

I re-watched this recently. I was only half paying attention and it is a perfectly adequate movie for exactly that situation.

Cruise is really funny. The entire thing breezes along. Diaz and Cruise don't have any romantic chemistry IMO but it does not matter. Really, nothing in the film matters and that is its charm.

I had no idea Mangold directed it. Never checked and I would not have guessed. He knows what he is doing which is (surprisingly) important because it is hard to spoof something if you don't have the talent to actually do what you are spoofing.

I did not watch it on Netflix but this would be a great Netflix movie. Fun and does not require your full attention and you mostly forget about it after you watch it.

THE BERMUDA DEPTHS (1978)

One of the unlikeliest screen pairings of all time perhaps. Carl Weathers and Burl Ives as marine biologists chasing some kind of Moby Dick type of sea turtle, who are the backdrop to the story of some troubled college guy falling for a mermaid type of woman / mythical sea siren. The most un-Carl-Weathers soundtrack imaginable perhaps...the music sounds like Jimmy Webb or John Denver stuff that might have been in The Last Unicorn. The movie is a little short on story and not great with pacing...and the lead actor isn't really an Oscar caliber guy so Carl takes over the screen any time they are in frame together. But the movie didn't skimp on cinematography. It looks really good. Other than a couple of funny boat miniatures which are kind of charming anyway.

I don't know... 5.5 / 10.

Yeah I like it a good amount. It does feel like a comedic mission impossible, or something like Cameron Diaz was watching a mission impossible movie and started daydreaming about being on an adventure with ethan hunt. everyone seems to be having fun in it and its a fun easy watch kinda one.

Wild America Special: Dangerous Encounters

A wildlife documentary narrated by Marty
Stouffer. Grizzly bears are territorial animals that leave claw markings on trees. It is hazardous for humans to be in the same territory as grizzly bears. In Alaska, a grown female moose stomped a man to death after being harassed with snow balls.

African bees are known as killer bees due to their very aggressive behavior. A person should just remember when fishing in alligator infested waters to proceed with extra caution. I enjoyed the documentary for its even flow throughout
