I can't rank the animated alongside the live action. Not that they are inferior or anything (MOTP ftw) it's just that it's really unfair comparing the two. Just doing the live action here:

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman 1989
Batman Forever
Batman Returns
Batman & Robin

And yeah, I ranked returns lower than Forever only because it's more of a perverse Tim Burton protect than a true Batman movie, IMO. That being said I prefer it over Forever.

Didn't see all those animated ones so I'll only include the theatrically released Phantasm among my rankings just for consistency. That said, I did see the Killing Joke and thought it was...okayish. I definitely found Batman Returns much better.

The Dark Knight- extremely well done, a gold standard for comic book movies in my opinion. It really sort of transcended the genre while also setting the standard very high for subsequent films. Ledger was incredible.

The Dark Knight Rises- a lot of people rag on it and the flaws are certainly there, but I think it is a very compelling film in spite of them. A lot of tense, well done scenes (the sewer fight is a standout) and atmosphere. Hardy killed it and the overall cast was solid.

Batman (89) - classic in my opinion and transitioned the way Batman was represented in live action incarnations from the campiness of the 60s show to a far more intense and brooding version. Keaton was epic as both Wayne and Batman, showing that even someone who is not particularly physically imposing could pull off the role really well if they are a damn good actor. Nicholson was clearly having a ton of fun and it's a very entertaining film.

Batman Returns- I love the fact that Burton kind of went off the rails with this one and made it more of a Burton movie that happened to have Batman in it rather than a straight up Batman movie. Say what you will about it but
1-awesome Elfman score (opening credits scene is one of my favorites)
2- strong performance from Pfeiffer that I've heard almost universal praise for
3- very memorable work from Devito and Walken as well
4- tons of atmosphere and a lot of weird, grotesque imagery

Returns is also one of the few comic book movies that pulls off having multiple villains in a way that seems cogent and highly effective. Contrast the Schreck, Penguin, Catwoman stuff with, say, Spider-Man 3 and its ridiculous attempt to shoehorn Venom and Goblin II along with Sandman.

Batman Begins- very little negative to say about it. It delivers in pretty much every way. I just think while it has fewer lows than Dark Knight Rises, it also has fewer highs. Still, a great origin story movie. Bale and Caine were awesome. League of Shadows scenes were quite solid. I thought Scarecrow was very well executed as well. I was really apprehensive about the Tumbler going into the film but ended up being fully on board with that vision of the Batmobile.

Mask of the Phantasm- It is undoubtedly awesome. I re-watched recently though and my one complaint would actually be about The Joker. I love Hamill's interpretation, but it feels like he suddenly hijacks the film and it is not exactly organic. They tie everything together with the flashbacks, but I thought the stuff with Bruce and Andrea was more compelling.

Batman '66- So campy and, as such, pretty hilarious for what it is. West was classic.

Batman Forever- Kilmer sort of acquits himself well but the movie does him no favors. O'Donnell is charismatic but the role did not seem to be particularly well written. The real flaws don't like with the dynamic duo so much as with the
over-the-top cartoonish world building and directing plus the awful, shitty version of Two Face. TLJ is a great actor who often seems incapable of a bad performance, but this one definitely proves an exception to that rule. Just really shitty and does not do justice at all to a great character. Carrey is alternately funny and irritating.

Batman and Robin- the less said, the better.

Ah I La máscara del fantasma! The phantasm is real good. Never thought cartoon be good but it was. I agree #2 for it is good. Very good loved plot.

I put 1st Batman Batman begins to me is best. Then Dark knight rises. Im a minority I dont care for Dark knight so much I feel the joker won. Well he did they built stuff on a lie. And in real life his point probably be proven about people turning kill one another.

Thought bane was better vilian. Bruce getting his ass kicked to. Only others I seen is batman and robbin

Love when people add in the animated films in to the conversation as I feel that is where Batman and DC really set themselves apart.

Batman (1989) -- it is it's own path that goes away from most the source material but I feel Burton created an incredible world and all the actors really got into their character. Get past the age of the actors and the creative leeway and you're left with an amazing version of the iconic character (that was needed after most people at the time still view live action batman as campy -- this movie was super dark). Also, the final act started from when Joker tries to kill pretty much the entire city, to Batman in the batwing to the cathedral battle is the best sequence in any batman movie, ever.

2. Dark Knight Returns: Part 1/ 2-- very dark, showing the difficulty older Bruce undergoes in a world when one superhero is weaponized by the US and all others are rendered pariahs by society. People disliked the mutants aspect but I love when Batman felt he had to take on the leader one on one to show the world he still has it. Also, the Joker sequence was absolutely insane -- how the showed the ending of their history was so well done. The superman aspect was cool, it was better in the novels but they handled it well.

3. Dark Knight -- Nolan nailed what comic book movies could be when you want to make them realistic. You can write paragraphs on this movie but it all comes down to Heath creating and delivering performance that has all of us willing to replay that movie multiple times.

4. Batman Returns - sorry die hard, this is a better action Christmas movies. It's over the top, a bit zany, great set pieces and costumes and the darkest most violent batman we've seen; his body count is crazy high -- love the scene where he straped the circus gangs member own bomb to himself and has that grin going as he watches him blow up. It's also a really awesome way to handle the penguin character without getting too cartoonish.

5. Year One (although phantasm could be here, tough call) -- I love that it gave Gordon a pov narrative and really got people to know the character and how bad ass he could be. The part where he throws the bat to Flask to make it fair always gets me.

7. Justice League: Doom -- don't care what anyone says, it's a Batman movie, and the quintessential example of "batman via preptime"

8. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight -- not a lot of people liked it but it's the probably the best adapation and it brought batman into the realm of horror and mystery (this will probably move up my list the more I watch it)

9. Assault on Arkham

Batman Begins is the all around best Batman movie with the least nonsense.

At some point towards the end the Dark Knight compeltely falls apart and the pacing is God Awful. The entire scene with joker blowing up a hospital. Wtf
