For my money, he's the best director currently in the game. Personally, I think Requiem for a Dream is the most innovative and hits the hardest. I also think Black Swan exhibits the most directorial talent. And both of those films have scores/soundtracks far superior to the rest. However, The Wrestler, through its script and the performance by Mickey Rourke, has to take the cake. Best performance (even over Rourke) goes to Ellen Burstyn in Requiem.

Noah was hot garbage.

Anyways....Personally, I go:

Certainly I think smalltime dramatic Aronofksky is the best version, The Wrestler and Black Swan being my favourites of his followed by Pi.

You simply cant be Requiem. My favorite movie of all time. 15/10

Black Swan is an easy number 2. 10/10

Then Pi 8.5/10

The Wrestler 8.4/10

Havent seen the others but Mother! is on my list real soon. Maybe tonight even, just heard a lot of conflicting reviews. Havent seen the others listed.

I wonder how the Batman series would've turn out if Darren Aronofsky was selected instead of Christopher Nolan.

you read my mind. PTA is easily top dawg American filmmaker, & one of the absolute best in the entirety of contemporary cinema. as much as I enjoy Aronofsky, I personally don’t think he has directed a masterpiece. PTA has directed at least two, possibly three. not saying that there isn’t an argument to be made about that, but it’s just how I feel. PTA’s filmography in general is more quality too.

Fincher, Tarantino worth mentioning too. as far as Hollywood filmmakers at least. probably more, but it’s late & my brain not work so good.

edit: the Coens too, for sure. fuck i need to go to sleep. that’s such an obvious one.

Yea I thought Noah was great.
It was nice to see this biblical story in sort of an ancient fantasy setting. I like that type of simple story done well and it this movie show the worst of human nature, as well as the nature of faith.
It was very interesting throughout and thrilling in parts.

I would like to see more big name directors take on biblical stories.

i wouldn't call him the best, but a lot of his films are just really spectacular and he has a unique style.

i wish though he'd get off this religious kick he's on b/c his recent films haven't been very interesting. mother and noah have both kinda been off the rails and he's not doing what he's really good at, which are character pieces.

black swan is probably his masterpiece actually in terms of the level of acting and complexity of the screenplay. after that it's a tossup between requiem and the wrestler.

for me personally, i love the wrestler the most. i grew up on wrestling, and diving into the sad world of a washed up pro wrestler (and done by a masterful actor like mickey rourke) was just fuckkin amazing to watch.

i love requiem too but that movie is hard to watch repeatedly. it's just so fuckin dark and so many of the characters just make me want to cry uncontrollably, especially the mother. jared leto got a lot of the attention of that film, but the amazing actor imo was ellen burstyn. she was just fucking incredible in that movie.

Nothing beats the Fountain. The GOAT film for me.
