Rambo (2008) is a Masterpiece

Oh, and did you notice Graham McTavish (the dickhead argumentative mercenary) was also the opposing manager in Creed?

He's memorable in both roles too. I felt like Bellew's cocky trashtalking heel was kind of underwhelming but I liked his storyline and McTavish really helped sell it. Loved the scene where he's basically laying down the law to Conlan and letting him know that he's going to get this payday for him so his family has more to live on when he goes away.

Agreed. The main actual boxing antagonists in Rocky 6 and Creed 1 are non-characters. McTavish had a heavy burden to sell that fighter-manager package all by himself and did a great job. Even when the two are walking to the cage for the final fight and Graham gets covered by the boxer's fighter stats, he's stealing the show as he's barking at him to prepare.

Def one of my favorite Stallone films. I seriously cannot say how many times I have seen this movie. Me and a buddy saw this while his girly wife drug my wife into Chocolat or some dumb ass girl film. My wife came in 20 minutes into both movies and sat beside me and enjoyed the shit out of it too. Glad I didn't marry no lil bitch.....

It’s so good on blu Ray . The sound of rain , the dark scenes are better black levels than most films.

I don't know about masterpiece, but I was shocked at how awesome the film is. And yeah, brutal shit.

Very good movie, but hard to rewatch... to brutal. The raid on the village is gut-wrenching... especially when a soldier just nonchalantly grabbed a baby out of his mothers arms and threw it into a fire.

I’ll check it out.

The commercials didn’t look good so I avoided watcing it when it came out. I’m suprised to read all of your reviews.

This is a subjective opinion of course, but this film just is Sylvester Stallone's greatest work for me. I realize there's another Rambo coming out but I don't know how it can compete or should compete with the Rambo 2008 entry.

First of all, the subject matter of this Rambo entry was interesting, very unique: a group of Christians go into help a small village in war-torn Burma; the village gets obliterated by a ruthless local infantry unit, the aid workers get captured.

Stallone is at his biggest, most-jacked, self. But he actually pulls it off, better than his character in the later - much weaker - franchise, The Expendables. He is an absolutely believable Vietnam War veteran killing machine. His line, "When you're pushed, killing is as easy as breathing" resonates so believably. He even understands himself, who he is: that he's a killing machine, remembering bits and pieces from his past and those who created him for the Vietnam War. His story and character are so well crafted.

And then there's the war violence. IMO, the violence is most brutal and realistic of any mainstream cinematic offering. Yes, more than even Saving Private Ryan. I read one review awhile ago that called it a gore film. But yeah, the village destruction, the killing fields, and then the lengthy last battle scene? Extremely brutal, raw, and intense. It blows you through the back of your seat. And the action is quick-moving, articulate, creative and believable.

If you haven't seen this film, it's a must-see. It still holds up very well 11 years later. Stallone doesn't get nearly enough credit for this film nor his character portrayal. I don't throw out the term masterpiece very often, but this film is in that stratosphere for what it is.

*BTW, it's on Netflix now, it wasn't for a long time.

I literally had no fucking clue that there was a Rambo in 2008 lol.

That was a hard hit for sure

No bullshit, i fucking loved that movie. The action scenes were incredible, and the plot was pretty decent. Its the very definition of a guy movie.

It's a great film, I like how it builds up and you want the bad guys to get destroyed, and Sly and co. do just that. Film is also great length and no filler.

I'd stop short of calling it a true masterpiece, but taking into consideration that it was one of those desperate sequels that nobody was asking for, I think it delivered on what everyone was looking for from a Rambo flick. In that regard, it is kind of a masterpiece within that realm. Just look at the terrible attempts to refresh other old genre franchises(Terminator, Jurassic Park, Alien, Die Hard, etc, etc). This is head and shoulders above them all.

Digital blood?

Yeah no fucking thanks sly.

If that was the case I would have no clue that it was. It has some of the most authentic-feeling and looking battle scenes ever and I've seen practically everything.

Let’s not forget the fuckin’ antagonist in that film, Major Pa Tee Tint - a sadistic, mass murdering,:eek::eek::eek::eek:phillic millitary leader. Stallone really pulled out all the stops to make us hate that mother fucker, and the end result of his demise is glorious due to how much of an emotional response he provoked.

It’s a great movie and gets shat on far too much.
