Question about "rear naked chocke"

I feel that it is so bcoz your opponent is so weak/exposed to u. He is just xtremely vulnerable, so much so that it is 'naked'. Makes most sense to me, unless someone with a history background rebuffs it

The name comes from the Japanese name used for the choke (from Judo). Hadaka Jime. Hadaka means naked. Being that it comes from judo this is likely referring to the fact that the gi is not used.
Ding! Ding! Ding! This is your winning answer girls and boys! Next best answer was by Envious, Muerte and Hakuma avatar guy.

It is known as lion killer because it is the move that Hercules used to kill the invulnerable lion of Nemea. His first great work out of the famous twelve.

If you can

Well, that wouldn't explain why the Japanese called it "hadaka". The answer to that, however, is:

衣類は必要としなかった

Or

"No clothing needed."

It's hot, sweaty, arm on throat action!! The original Japanese version had your wrist right on the windpipe:

Can't get more naked than that.

The version popularized by BJJ is just a more efficient version (anytime you can triangle a limb around something, DO it...).

its rear naked because your not using any part of your gi to choke causing all mma chokes to be "naked"

...unless you're wearing a gi.

IT HAPPENS!!

the Japanese version was for a real fight not sport,
so you sneak up behind a guy and grab his neck,
you can't expect to sink in your elbow all the way to his jaw.
If he is good he will slip out.

Who would win in a fight between Hercules and Rickson ?

Hercules by Anaconda ? Rickson by Armbar ?

Great answer!

Good answer by VM too! Hope you reincarnate soon buddy!

nybody ever use
that wrist watch that Royce Gracie was endorsing at one time
where you can do a sleeve choke using this watch even
with a T-shirt on?
that was kinda cool idea.

Best answer so far.
"Hadaka" is japanese not just for "naked" but for "bare" (i.e. no clothing). And as far as I was told before, it does refer to the fact that the kimono is not used in the technique.
And yes, in Brazil, it is referred to as "Mata Leao" which is portuguese for Lion Killer. Why? Dunno.
my vote for most useful post by a white belt this year so far.
you are right the Naked part of the choke refers to the idea that the gi is not needed or traditionally used in this choke. whether it is yours or your opponents.
