It's a freakshow of a country. Not real in the sense that it's a fucking circus from top to bottom. That's how it's always come across to me, across the pond.

I'm reading it's simply a USAF base which will be hosting Qatari troops and that this is a normal thing (Singaporean troops for example are already hosted at the same base).

No, but it was a mess, still. And America had an awful reputation then too. I think you forget how laughed at Bush was. He was an embarrassment. And then there's Clinton and his deviant ways. The freakshow has been evident for a while, to the entire world.

I've lived here 11 years from across the pond and I've never known anything like this. I still adore this country, he won't be around forever.
