Q&A on Thailand

Also just wondering is there easy access to supermarkets and butchers there?? I'll obviously be on a diet through out the week while training and just wondering if it'll be easy to buy meats and grains in bulk, mainly diced chicken breast, potatoes, whole grain cereals like oatmeal, apples, tuna and wholemeal breads??

I've heard it's better to bring you own supplements to i'll just buy that stuff and find a way to ship it over with me.

Yes you can of course find chicken, but where are you going to cook it? Whole grains will be harder, and cans of tuna virtually impossible. In all likelyhood your diet is going to be completely changed, so just be prepared for it. As for supps, you CAN find protein if you go to a farang area, but it will be expensive as hell. My advice is just bring a tub of protein on your carry on luggage.

I wouldn't worry about protein powder.

You can get grilled chicken at any road side stand. Just ask for Gai Yang. I ate papaya salad, sticky rice, and grilled chicken for lunch everyday. It is very healthy and is perfect for a post training meal.

You can buy fruits at road side stands or go to the daily markets. Food is so cheap in Thailand, there is no reason to bring supplements. Just eat the real stuff....

I'd just cook my stuff on a small hotplate in my hotel room if they allow that. I'm flexible with the diet though.

I do the whole 5 - 6 meals a day with controlled portions so it'd be more convenient to be able to cook my own meals in my hotel room, i can just adjust the diet to rice vegetables and pork/chicken then have my protein drinks inbetween meals to get my needed protein. Then on the weekends just let loose and enjoy thai cuisine to it's fullest.

Thanks, reading through fightpassport, I heard patong has an open gym but whenever you come in your trainer will come work with you on the things you would like to improve. That sounds awsome, however it sounds too awsome to be true. Can anyone verify it?

Hey, i'm at Patong Boxing Gym right now and it really is a kick ass place. I am a beginner (2 weeks of MT) and I have had my own trainer for almost everyday I've been here. To answer your question, you definately can say what you'd like to focus on that day and they will take care of you.

I can say that I think this is a great camp for a beginner. Your trainer will take everything into account (like my shitty cardio) and work from there. I feel like I'm learning so fast because he's always there to correct every little mistake.

He can find already cooked Chicken, and put it in the fridge. Problem is, he needs to find a way to heat it. Maybe ask to use a microwave where he is staying? Tesco has plenty of Tuna cans and other choices of fish.

Last summer, when I went to Thailand, I brought a 5lbs tub of protein powder, lasted me 2 months. Very useful to hit your required daily protein.

Anything and everything you can tell us about your experience at Patong (training, living, location, everything) would very much be appreciated.

Sinbi and Patong Boxing Gym are on my short list at this point, but it is almost impossible to get feedback on Patong.

Much like you I'm looking to get a great base to build on in the future, so I want to learn all the basics right.

Gai Yang is very healthy!? Do you not realise how oily that stuff is

Yeah i've scoped out the places i wanted to stay at (the gym across the road of tiger muay thai) and i think they have a microwave there, it shouldn't be too hard to buy my own hot plate and microwave though and cook my own stuff in my hotel room though should it??

it'll be a 3 month trip based out of tiger muay thai but i'll probably shell out and stay at one of the bungalows across the road from there.

Yes sir. I'm black also and have never had a problem while in Thailand. Good to see another brotha into muaythai.

I have heard the name most thai bargirls use for black guys is "chocolate man".

I'm not black but that is a pretty cool name. I'm white like snow but they don't call me white chocolate man =(

thai girls say chocolate man but it is not meant in a bad way.
there are even food products in thailand with a black mans face on the label, and the word ******.
they have ****** beans,****** biscuits,****** everything.
try stocking those products in the states.

anyone here recall some of the funny language differences in thailand.
one i recall hearing many times is pussy accident (periods).
that always cracks me up.
"sorry honey,not tonight pussy accident"

Well, pretty much everything that you can read in that FightPassport review is on the money. I'm paying 18,000 baht ($536 usd) a month for my room and full time training. I pretty much have my own trainer, maybe one day a week sharing him with one other person. The sessions are small, normally only 4-8 people training.

There's not an exact structure to the training for everyone. Because the same trainer is with you everyday, they have the chance to pick the bad habits that stick out and work on that solely. I've only done MT for two weeks, and my trainer didnt like my hip rotation. So for like and hour and a half he just focused on showing me how to rotate my hips properly during kicks and knees.

Today they decided they wanted me to spar. Like I said before, I've only got 2 weeks of experience and shitty cardio so I was a little scared. I took a pretty good beating from the other guy but I feel like I learned so much! I had my trainer watching, the other guys trainer, and also a third one there to point out what were doing wrong. 3 former lumpinee fighters there to correct the mistakes of two beginners. kick Ass!

As far as the living arangements go, it's also pretty good. If you dont want to live at the camp, you could probably find cheap apartments for like 3-4,000 baht, but the price is very likely to double come the high season. The camp is up in the hills with a great view of the beach. Your away from most of the tourism, it's very quiet at night, but it only takes me like 3-5 minutes on the scooter to get down to the beach and club area. The food selection is great. There is this night market that has like 40 stands of all kinds of foods (again less then a 5 minute scooter ride). You can sit there and eat or they will wrap it up for you to go. Honestly, this stuff is amazing. My dinner tonight was all from this market

1 bag of sliced pineapples 35 cents
shrimp pad thai 75 cents
huge piece of grilled chicken $1

The mall next to the market also has a grocery store inside also if you'd like to cook your own stuff. The gym lets you use their stove if you'd like.

Anyway, i'm kinda ranting but you get the drift, if I can answer any other questions just let me know.

That sounds absolutely awesome.

1) Do you know if the place is much busier in the June-July timeframe?
2) Did you go straight for the on-camp accommodations or did you shop around? I might be going with a friend and some sort of bungalow/appartment/whatever with two beds would be great if the price is right...

You say there is no exact structure to the training so:
3) How many hours of training do you end up doing daily?
4) Do they have you go through what seems to be the standard set of push ups, pull ups, crunches etc.?
5) Are there daily runs?

Anyway, thanks for your input. It would be great if you'd keep us posted on your experiences at Patong.
