Q&A on Thailand

So I guess your visits trumps me being Thai? My bloodline is from Surin and Bangkok. And about my statement earlier, I was explaining to guy about the prostitution game in Thailand. For the types of girls: Whites mainly go for the dark skinned girls and Thais mainly go for the light skinned girls.

But then again what do I know? I'm only a Thai person living in Thailand.

Ok, since it has a direct bearing on this line of conversation, rather than searching the internet, what is the line of thinking between light or darker skin Thai girls or guys for that matter.

I am a caucasian male of European descent that was born in the United States. I have dated Asian girls before, and although some girls have lighter skin and others darker skin, I never used that as a way to measure their attractiveness or social class. I believe that in humans and animals the skin or coat color is generally determined by their ancestors proximity to the equator at birth.

Dark or light skin, I think Asian girls are equally attractive. So, can you shed some light on that for me, and don't be politically correct for my sake, I would just like an honest answer for my own personal knowledge. Thanks.

Ps. This is an excellent thread.

Hey Guys,

I'm headed to Thailand October 29th of this year. For approx 3-6 months. Maybe longer if all goes well.

Questions about using ATM Machines.

Does anyone know the average fee of using the machines , I heard it is 150 Baht per transaction.

Now say back here in Canada my card has a max withdrawal amount of 500 Canadian dollars per day. When I take out money in Thailand, is there a set max amount on there machines over there? Or will my max daily withdrawal amount apply over there, but in thai Baht?

Thanks alot,

I work for a financial institution.

Your bank will have a daily limit on your card no matter what. So whatever the conversion rate is when it comes back to the card it can't go over 500. I would talk to your bank to see about raising the daily limit for a few months. Most banks will accept it with a letter request.

The atm machine limit depends on the machine itself. Say your card limit is 500. One atm machine may only let you take out 200 because thats the machines limit and has nothing to do with your card or another atm machine may let you take out 1000 but your card limit is only 500 so thats all you can take. I hope this makes sense.

Should farangs wai?

Ok, here is my Thai culture question. Should farangs wai? I know western cultures generally shake hands when greeting, and Thais perform a wai. And, I believe the height of the hands for the wai is dependant upon the social hiearchy of the person being greeted. The hands should be at a level near or above the top of the head for someone at the top of society and who is well respected, about level with the the top of the bridge of the nose for someone higher than you, and chin level for equals. Children are greeted with smiles, and "undesirables" are not given a wai.

However, I heard that because farangs are not Thai, they are not expected to wai and that it is actually acceptable if they do not. And, sometimes farangs can look foolish, or even create a "situation" by performing a wai in an incorrect social manner. Can someone who is Thai, or well versed in the Thai culture, jump in here and help me out? Thanks.

You should Wai

He's just making a generalization. The fact that you contradict it doesn't really mean anything other than the fact that you might be an exception to that perception/belief.

I'm Asian, also and notice the same thing. Asian men and non-Asian men tend to have different taste when it comes to Asian women. Next time you're in an area with a large Asian population (like California... Think SF or LA), try to find an Asian guy who thinks Lucy Liu is attractive. It will be tough :D

how was your time in Pai? What was the training like?

Pai was cool, the trainers were outstanding. The town is a bit too hippy for me. I stood out pretty bad. I don't have dreads and don't wear fisherman pants :)

The camp was flooded with 20 hippy backpackers who thought it would be cool to try Muay Thai for the day, so it was overloaded. I guess the weeks beforre they only had 4 people and it was basically 1-1 training.

Again, I love Sinbi. It is the best fit for me. No matter which camp I try, I always come back to Sinbi.

Just because you visited Thailand that doesn't make you truly understanding of Thai culture. Just because you had some conversations with Thai people that doesn't mean you're "in the know." You're still just an outsider looking in.

You've got that right. Thais are the most racist people I've ever met.

im half thai so should i hate myself.
most thai dont like dark skin, that is why so many isaan girls try to lighten there skin.
they like pale girls with a straight nose.
dark skin girls are considered poor, isaan farm girls.
i am from isaan and im proud of that, and i love my dark skin girls,
my wife is from isaan and she is so hot,no one could honestly look at my wife and say she is ugly.

It's like that in the philippines too.

In this case I guess it's because darker skinned filipinos have been considered lower/working class for centuries. The farmers, the laborers etc.

The funny thing is the VAST majority of Filipinos are brown-dark skinned. Same thing about the whitening products.

This seems to be a bigger thing for women than men though, men can be dark and still be considered generally handsome. Though i do notice that MOST of the male movie stars pop idols here are light skinned, and usually of partial caucasian ancestry.

This whole light-skinned, long straight hair, thin nose thing seems to be the asian standard for a beautiful woman. Different culture i guess.

Isan girls are consistently hotter than anywhere else in Thailand in my experience.

I stayed in Bangkok for 2 weeks. The seafood was out of this world. I was there for work though so I didn't really get to do much :icon_conf

I am not a scholar on European affairs, however, I think the light skin/ darker skin perception as it pertains to the wealthy and working class may not necessarily only extend to Asian cultures. I believe during the European Victorian Era, that having very white light or pale skin was equated with the wealthy classes, as they did not have to labor outside, and European caucasians who generally worked outside as in labor related occupations seemd to have darker skin tones.

This is where the term Redneck originated from?
white guy working in the sun and his skin turns red or darker color?

Good point. Yes, I believe that would be true. Although, today it has taken on a different meaning.

Forget about seeing who is a more bloodlined thai. Compete over who can provide more accurate info.

!

Typically, you can withdraw a max of 20000 baht per time fromthe atms. with bangkok bank's branch however, you can withfdraw 25000 baht, but their exchange rate seems to be worse.

In one day however, I can seem to withdraw only 50000 max. This last limit I am not sure whether it is because of the limit of my home country or thailand.

Regarding the fees for transaction, I was curious too and tested the the system. basically, I withdrew 20000 baht twice(the atms someotimes do not allow you to see your own balance otherwise)

So I took note after the first withdrawal what was the balance. after the second withdrawal the balance again.

Guess what! the amount that will be deducted, is (20000+400) baht!Meaning, after I saw the balance at the end of the first withdrawal, the next balance I saw was a deficit of 20400 baht!

Any info just ask me, I am a foreigner who have lived in thailand since 2007
