Q&A on Thailand

Sunwalker, how did you like Tiger? Im guessing it was your first camp two years and i know they have expanded immensely, but how was the training?

Could you write a review on 69 Penang gym? I have not heard of anyone training there and would like to read your complete thoughts on your stay their.

i wish i could man, truthfully i've only been there a couple dozen times at most, and it was only for clinchwork like the people i mentioned, never did padwork or sparring there. i would go there a few times a week before heading back to my other gym for pads/sparring

My friends when they changed gyms both trained there full time for free, or at least they did until last month when they left the country. they didnt live there but trained everyday. I know 5 or 6 foreign nakmuays that go there at minimum twice a week for clinching. They have never payed either. So basically all you do is go there and just say "clinch" and you're welcome to join in

ancientmuaythai.com has couple pros, a couple beginners but most are somewhere in between.

Definitely not a macho gym, it has very positive environment dedicated to working together and not about being the toughest there. Teacher is a phemon, links to his demonstrations at website.

Mostly farang with a few thais, teacher is Spanish

EDIT: if anyone is coming to chiang mai for the first time to train id be happy to help anyone with finding a good place to stay and train. Will be in chiang mai till dec 17 and returning february 2010

Thai guy at the school won fight by knockout in round one when i started at the school a few weeks ago, and currently another fighter, this one french canadian is training for a fight soon.

This gym unlike a lot of other schools that emphasis power and speed, emphasises awareness, technique, fluidity. Great great great school IMO

Here is my Crui teacher YouTube - Muay Sangha Five Elements

J_C im heading over to thailand tonight and will be arriving in chiang mai in about a week, what gym are you training at?

ancientmuaythai.com

called muay sangha, check out website....

Does anyone know any fitness gyms in Chiang mai? I'm doing language and writing classes this month so i'm not training boxing. I was shredded before my fight, now after not training for two weeks i'm getting fat so i need to just get into the gym 3 or 4 times a week. whats the cost too if you know? i've read some places daily is about 40 baht.

Heading off to bangkok, arrivin in the last week of November. I want somewhere for muay thai that is quite well connected and not too far, so i would rather not go out to Kaesamarit or Sor Vorapin (think they're located slightly out of the city?) I won't have any transport aside from public hence the one i was considering at the top would be JITTI.

Good idea... or no ? :) Or get a bus down to phuket, i trained at tiger last time. :)

Stay in BKK if you really want to get the most out of your training. Check out this website for some known gyms in BKK. Jitti just happens to be the first one cataloged.

Us foreigners have something Thais don't: FREEDOM. We need to use that skill to assist others, I think.

I just want to point out that I believe this is absolutely ridiculous. Freedom is a "skill"? How exactly are you going to use your "skill" to help the helpless Thais and everyone else in the world who didn't get to be born in 'Murrica? And all of those countries that you would call on to help fix Thailand's problems have issues of their own don't they? It's not like we developed countries have got our shit so figured out we can fix the whole damn world.

Can you read? The guy asked how Koreans and Asians in general are treated in Thailand. I can answer that for him from direct, personal experience. Can you? No, you couldn't. So you gave him some irrelevant information instead.
Yes, I've trained side by side with many Japanese and Singapore men, and also a Chinese. We were all being treated the same way.

I actually think some of the things you have to say have value, I think the way you say them makes you a dick.

What you CAN do is speak your mind but do it without sounding like an wannabe wiseguy with a chip on your shoulder. If you think you think you can get respect by acting street, you're in the wrong venue.
I'm not really sure what you're talking about.

If you're actually the person you're trying to give the impression you are, you'd man up, be an adult and actually address your attitude issue instead of acting all butt-hurt.
Several paragraphs of insults and you finish with this? Classy.

SarahS, thank you for your info. You must understand that respect is your strength, being unrespectful to other people just weekens you- noone will respect you either.
Ironic. That's roughly the point I was trying to make about Thailand in the first place. Funny it's directed back at me here.

I was there only about 7 months ago, so witnessed most the expansion as it happened. I wrote a bit review of it here. I didn't like it much, but don't say it isn't good for anyone, either.

Are you accusing me of being an American here? That's a harsh allegation. Besides, I'd like you to explain how I can be so smart if I'm an American? Doesn't make sense. I'm guessing you're the American here, not me.

Yes, freedom is a skill. It is something learned. You're born free, but not born with the knowledge of the virtues contained within the ideal.

Yes, we should lead/teach by example. Perhaps we do not have to directly teach others, yet simply refusing to part take in their lowly ways may send the right example.

Seriously man....no one cares. This argument was played out a long time ago.

No. That doesn't sound like me.

Where I do come from, however, it's polite to introduce yourself before you ask the names of others.

How well do you think Koreans are accepted there? I see a lot of white people going to Thailand and even some black people but I don't hear anything from asians in general.

In general, Thais are cool with Koreans. Also, Thai women tend to dig Korean (East Asian) guys, because like many SE Asian nations, the higher classes and "beautiful" people tend to have more Chinese blood, so lighter skinned Asians are more the standard of beauty there. As long as you don't start shit and have a good attitude, the Thais will be very good to you. However, if you go with the attitude (that some of our Korean brothers and sisters have) that you are better than them, then you might as well stay home. Overall Thais are super friendly and cool!
