Mostly only the non touristy gyms provide free training; the more tourist ones will be very hard to get free because they will be viewing you constantly as a tourist; money source; Bank of Bankok ATM...
The gym I'm at now, I showed up and said I wanted to fight for them and would fight twice a month, but not less than once a month, and money was never asked for. It's a very poor gym, but; they've never had a foreign fighter here before.
I had my wife translating for me when I showed up; she told them I left Phuket because I was sick of racism and overpricing for white guys, and thus they treat me like a friend, not a customer.
Of course, the gym is very poor, and I've voluntarily bought a lot of new equipment (2 sets of sparring gloves; 2 sets of shin guards; 2 sets of pad/bag gloves; 1 XXL heavy bag; a new set of pads for the trainer - there is only 1 trainer here). I just thought I should give as much back to the gym as I could. But the only money I've ever given was a share of my fight money; they did not ask for that, either. My manager got a little money from the promoters for producing a fighter, but it was his money, not a cut from my share. But I gave some of the money to my trainer; he was reluctant to take it but I made him. He ended up sharing the money with everyone, including me, anyway (mostly whiskey).
But yeah, if you go to gyms like Tiger or Rawaii in Phuket or something, it may be several months before it's free, and that's only the training, not the room and food.
If you want to be treated like a real Thai pro, you have to go out into the sticks where there are NO OTHER FOREIGNERS about; places where they're not accustomed to ripping whites off, so it does not cross their mind to do so. Even then; if you are getting everything for free, give as much back as you can afford to give, like I did (it's probably better to buy gear than give money; this way the young Thai boys learning Muay Thai will benefit for years to come with your gear; but if you give money it just means your trainers will blow it on whiskey and you'll get no training the next day coz they're all hung over!).
Has anyone heard anything positive/negative about Kaewsamrit Gym ? I spoke with Vey (who I'm guessing is a trainer there), and everything looked pretty good. Any infos would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
How would I come about getting a Visa for say, 3 months? Is it easy to obtain?
I'm 100% going, no doubt next year. I just don't know anything yet, after Christmas i'll start to really look into Thailand and plan everything fully.
Go to your closest city and hit up the Thai emabassy.
LOLGreat post, thank you! I'm going soon to Thailand soon and I'd like to compete. Still my technique is not fully thai because I did muay thai for a year only and before - different other fullcontact sports ( boxing etc..). So few questions:
1) What gym is better to "adjust" technique to more Muay Thai style? probably some highly farang gym with good explanation level?( I heard that in TrueBee they really pay attention at you)
2)Where would be better to look for a gym that wouldn't charge me money because I'm fighting for it? Issan?
Thank you.
How well do you think Koreans are accepted there? I see a lot of white people going to Thailand and even some black people but I don't hear anything from asians in general.
LOL
Just because Issarn is good at raising thoroughbred sluts it don't mean they'll give you free training!
Fuck; I'll put the info in a sticky article if the mods request it. I can't write this shit over and over...
Never research Issarn again on the net. Stupid place of people with lower standards than the rest of Thailand. If you mention Issarn again, I will no longer talk on this forum.
Finding a free gym in Thailand is about finding good people. Many gyms are free, but you have to look for them yourself; you'll find these gyms all over Thailand, especially away from Issarn-money-hungry-***s.
However; if you find a free gym, it may not be the up to date pro fighting B fucking S that you need. You're probably going to find you have to work even harder yourself to compensate for the "free" things you thought you were getting.
Good fucking luck.
I think their special prices are only for Thais, Indonesians, Malyasians, Cambodians, Myanmarinizationolites and Laoitian folks.How well do you think Koreans are accepted there? As for the rest of you;
What I say is true. If you think I lie, challenge me directly; don't just call me a liar. Thailand has serious problems; perhaps foreign influence is what it needs to help stem the stupidity that happens here.
Us foreigners have something Thais don't: FREEDOM. We need to use that skill to assist others, I think.
