Q&A on Thailand

DAm! My flight itenary goes from NY to Singapore to Phuket!

the flight I'm looked at goes from LAX to china to bangkok and I have to take a plane to chiang mai.

This question is for the veterans who have been to Thailand before , and have gone through the intense workouts the gyms offer over there.

I'm leaving in just under 3 months to Thailand. I've been training fairly intense here. A small surgery has kinda side-lined me for the next 2 weeks , but I will be all good to continue my training by late August.

Now I'm going to be training for 6 months over there. And I am planning and excited to train 2x a day , and get involved in everything from sparring , clinching...etc

Now what do you guys do to avoid injury... I mean i'm bound to have to get injured atleast once during my stay..I'm just hoping it will be a minor lay-off for a few days maximum.

What are things I can do to prepare? I've been doing long distance running and so forth. But I heard to strengthen your neck , back for clinching?

So I'm guessing back extensions would be good? What should I be doing for my neck?

Stretching I know is a must...I have three months before I leave so I want my body to be A-1 ready to go.

The first week I start training I also heard to kind of take it easy. Like train once a day only , and maybe train every second day or so. Just to get use to the climate and also get over the jet lag (i'm coming from Canada). Do you guys do this also?

Thanks In advance,

I was just about to mention the neck strengthening but you already know to do that. I'd be running 8km or 5 miles also before you train in Canada so your body can become accustomed to the transition. Do lots of pad work too at your home gym. Focus on kicks so you don't get worn out. It's not too hard to avoid and I'm sure you will not get injured from sparring Thais cause they spar for technique. The one element you can not account for in your training at home is the humidity. You'll find out what I'm talking about as soon as you step off the plane.

I tell you a very valuable advice since you have many months. ahead.

Try running barefoot, on concrete and asphalt. Get some callous and condition your sole to be thicker.

As I recall, I have had two seperate blisters on different occasions which kept me out of a week each. Think, if you have blisters under your foot what training can you do that wont worsen it?

I was trying to imply that sitting out because of blisters is the least manliest thing I've ever heard, and I related to what you posted and we are on a semi public forum so every post is up for discussion.
P.S training with blisters is very simple the make blister pads that cost like 50 cents at the pharmacy, I have no idea why someone would sit out a week because of a blister lol.
P.P.S do you even train muay thai any real nak muay would never be sidelined by blisters I had a friend who trained and fought with a cracked sternum now that is real pain.

Now that you elaborate it is more clear.

It is not about manliness nor toughing it out. It is about the pratical reason that whether you train kick, teep or knee or whatever that is standing in MT you are making it worse(Aside from the pain).

So it is directly the pratical reason that you will make it worse, and worse..

you put athletic tape over the blister pad till it heals it hardly affects the blister or your ability to kick, add ointment for faster healing, I trained a whole month with that blister you see up there, blister pad+ointment+athletic tape is the way to train around bad blisters.

Did you feel pain when you kick(Assuming you are standing on the blistered leg)? It affected my form too, when the pain came everytime I kicked.

At least this advise is here on sherdog, so others can learn.

BTW, I have been in and out of Thailand since end year 2007

Yeah blisters in Thailand are a bitch, here's my foot from Thailand:

Was worse the first time I trained there. A big piece on the bottom of my foot (think more than half the width of my foot, circular) blistered, but it was deep, the bottom few layers of skin separated from the flesh beneath, so it was sealed shut, but when I trained on it, I could feel the separated layer rubbing on my foot, incredibly painful. Had to rub a heap of anti-bac cream on that sucker every night and really made sure it absorped.

Make sure you put gauze under the tape or taking that tape off is going to be pretty miserable.

Here's mine from this year before I cut it off:

Wow...very dangerous!

I pray to god i dont get fooled...

I've seen them looking like that and some do sell their asses and mouths but they usually tell you, "I ladyboy, I ladyboy". Don't worry about them though. Just stick to the drunk foreign chicks and you will not have a problem and it will only cost you some alcohol and lame dancing.

If they have bigger than an A cup there is a good chance that they are ladyboys I've been told. See Emma:
