Die Hard can happen at any time of the year.

Elf, Christmas Story, Polar Express, etc etc can’t. Those are Christmas movies.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone partially takes place on Christmas. Not a Christmas movie.

Christmas being essential to the plot is the parameter. Christmas is a prerequisite to a Christmas movie. If a movie can exist without Christmas, it’s not a Christmas movie.

Christmas is the main point of the movie, it's the entire reason Hans Gruber and his goons are attacking Nakatomi Plaza when they do.

They even used several classic Christmas songs to score the movie. I've never heard Winter Wonderland, Let Is Snow and Christmas in Hollis by Run D.M.C. in a non Christmas movie.

I always appreciated how in 3 when John kills the terroeist in the dump truck after asking if he’s seen anybody else came through he says “he was a jolly fat guy with eight reindeer, surprised you didn’t see him.” And a little bell homage to the original score plays.

Christmas is the main point of the movie, it's the entire reason Hans Gruber and his goons are attacking Nakatomi Plaza when they do.

They even used several classic Christmas songs to score the movie. I've never heard Winter Wonderland, Let Is Snow and Christmas in Hollis by Run D.M.C. in a non Christmas movie.

All sprinkles on top, not a main ingredient.

The director said it wasn’t intended to be a Christmas while it was being made, Bruce Willis said it’s not a Christmas movie. I’ll take their word.
