So what say you all? Should PR be allowed to become a State? I personally can remember when they were voting on leaving the Union just a few years ago. I just don't see how this happens. This would shift the balance to the Dems and I dont see the GOP allowing that

WASHINGTON — Puerto Rico's non-voting representative in Congress is introducing a bill that seeks to make the U.S. territory a state by 2021.

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez said Wednesday that 14 Democrats and 20 Republicans currently sponsor the bill among the 435 members in the House of Representatives

Didn't this just happen?

It would be preferable to give PR independence imo.

Hell no. 50 is a beautiful number. If they want money, give them money. They can move here if want. But their rum sucks and we don't need another spanish speaking state. We have enough of those already.

I'm sorta biased in favor because I have a lot of Puerto Rican friends, but I think this is a terrible time for it. We have a country that is already divided against itself because so many of our political policies overlook and overrule the cultural diversity within our large and varied country. Until we relearn to decentralize much of our governance adding more states is a bad idea.

Just merge the stupid Dakotas together. Boom. 50 states.

Another shining example of socialism

51st State? California will be gone by then. If the grand standers like Brown,Pelosi and Waters are to be believed.

It would be a bad fiscal choice.

Pr is a huge financial disaster.

They're in ruins and obviously looking for a way out. Cutting them off completely is a better solution.

I don't want the ideology of a failed country to leak into the US. Forget about the hurricane that devastated PR last year. In 2015 (and 2016) 33% of their population fled to the US after the the PR government ran their finances into the ground.

Also about 90% of those people that fled the country LEFT THEIR DOGS behind!! Totally abandoned. Some even locked the door behind them never to return.

And you are complaining about "oh like uuuuumm, "political policies bla bla ba, cultural diversity" here in the US? GTFO with that nonsense.

The only good thing to come out of this ordeal is that Puerto Ricans have pretty much lost the right to criticize the US (or any other country that hasn't gone belly up) ever again.

Long overdue, and will probably still be long overdue 20 years from now.

There is a picture of some cow that works for their government making a speech. She looks just like Chris Farley.

Fuck Puerto Rico, they are billions of dollars in debt and they just want the federal government to foot the bill, that is the ONLY reason they are doing this.
