Fought to a decision where two of the three judges had him losing 30-26; and this wasn't coming off a knee operation and 6 months off shogun, like we saw vs griffin and jones, yet gustafsson gets seemingly little credit for that win where he chose to stand and bang with rua for 2 rounds before exploiting his superior grappling.

I think he'd lose. I feel like there is a certain class of LHW that gus falls under that shogun couldn't deal with... you know the BIG LHW fighters. Jones, Gus, OSP, Rumble... when shogun is up against guys like that, he looks like he should be in another weight class.

I think Gus would still win due to superior skills and physical attributes , Rua is too reckless at times and gets caught alot , even in his younger prime years , ..... also depends on rules , under Pride i'd edge slightly towards Rua ,

Also this new generation of LHW have frames of HW , look at Gus , Jones , OSP , Johnson theses guys are bigger then alot of the heavyweight of the last decade ( Fedor , CroCop , Big Nog , Igor ( who didn't even belong at LHW , hell he was smaller then some welterweights ).

Basically this is the evolution of MMA ... it'd be like Coleman vs Stipe .... Stipe would destroy Coleman at his peak.

During Pride they didn't cut weight, so you need to compare them to the current middleweight division, if you want to make it more fair, because we should already know that the sport is at a different level now.

The Shogun Gus fought isn’t a shadow of prime Shogun. Prime Shogun dispatches Gus similarly to how Rumble did.

Gus. It's a different era and has a height/reach/wrestling advantage that "prime" Shogun never saw. The closest opponent was Overeem, but LHW Overeem gassed and gave up in about 2 minutes if his opponent was good.

If Gus had some trouble with an old Shogun and could not finish him, then I am pretty sure the 2005 version of Shogun would beat up Gus pretty bad.
