Prime Shogun or Prime Wanderlei

Wand was definitely not one dimensional.

He was the best fighter in the world in his weight class and he even defeated and competed with top heavyweights.

He had heavy punches with both hands, had good kicks and had arguably the best Muay Thai Clinch and knees in the game. He was also a BJJ black belt who had great sub defense and great strike defense off his back. In his prime, he was very good at escaping from bottom position. When on top, he had extremely brutal ground and pound and we saw him win by sub against Heavyweight Dirty Bob.
The people that think Wanderlei was one dimensional didn't watch Wanderlei vs Cro Cop 1, Wanderlei vs Hendo 1, Wanderlei vs Hunt, or Wanderlei vs Rampage 2. He was a well rounded fighter in his prime with a good jab, good takedowns/TDD, top control and he set up his clinch and hooks well. He also had a good kicking game.

He had many skills in his arsenal, but he was very one dimensional none the less.

He came with wild aggression. That was his one dimension.

To clarify, i meant one dimensional in his general approach and style, not his techniques.

Shogun was more technical, Wand was more of a physical brute.

I'd favor Shogun.

Although apparently they fought behind the scenes at Chute Boxe over a puppy. Story is Wand got a new dog from that.
Please tell more of that story

Wand was a great fighter but in every aspect a prime Shogun outshines him by quite a huge margin.

Stand Up hands: Shogun more technical but lets put them even there because Wand was brutal and could connect.

Leg kicks: Shogun way more technical with the much better kicks

footwork: Shogun by a mile. Way more technical getting in out of range or working lateral.

wrestling: again Shogun

BJJ; Again Shogun with phenomenal defensive and offensive jiu jitsu

The fight to watch as comparison is imo Shogun Machida and Shogun Rampage. You try to brutalize Shogun and he counters you brutally. You try to be the more technical fighter and he lays traps for you again countering you and then going for the kill . Respect both tremendous but Shogun was just the better much better fighter overall.

Shogun had better takedowns but his TDD was bad. I feel like wrestling should be broken down into 4 categories, takedowns/TDD/clinch/mat wrestling maybe even 5 with top/bottom wrestling.

I think Wanderlei's mat wrestling was slightly better. Rampage isn't a good comparison to Wanderlei IMO he had big holes in his clinch game while Wanderlei was very strong in the clinch. Machida isn't either as he fights totally different to Wanderlei.

I do think Shogun was more well rounded but I think it might not have mattered due to the style match up.

But he wasn't in his prime though, he went for takedowns fairly often and did a lot of ground fighting on top.

Yes, Wanderlei outwrestled and mounted 110 kg Schrijber and 130 kg Hunt. He could probably take down and beat today's ranked HW's like Rozenstruik and Tuivasa.
He slipped uder punches and used takedowns very well when opponent goes out of balance.

9/10 times Shogun, but Sherdog’s population of morons will ensure you get plenty of picks both ways

Shogun via better fight IQ. imho

No shit?
I never seen that sir.

I tried finding the vid.

It was Wand giving his side and Shogun just saying that's not what happened.

With the amount of respect Shogun had for Wand at the time, I don't think he was going to bring it up by himself or address it much.

Wand was still "king".

Yeah Wandy was the top dog at that point.
Thanks for trying to find the video though sir.

Prime Wand would've annihilated him. Shogun was always aggressive and very hittable, while Wand had tremendous durability and scary power. Shogun would've walked into something and Wand's finishing ability would've ensured that if he didn't KO Shogun cleanly then his follow-up would've sealed the deal.
