Prime Shogun or Prime Wanderlei

Wasn't there a story about a fight between them at Chute Box over a pitbull puppy and Wand won the dog or something meaning he beat Shogun?

That's the story sir.
Shogun has never denied it so it must've happened.

I still lean Shogun tbh.

They both did well in the ring, but Shogun did well in the Cage where Wanderlei did not.

Got to say Shogun.
Also, Shogun was drastically more well rounded.

If you're to believe the rumors regarding the dog, Wandy.

Shogun did have a tendency to get into brawls at times, even in his physical prime(vs Lil Nog 2005), I'm not sure that would've went so well against a 2003/4 version of Wandy.

Shogun was more technical, Wand was more of a physical brute.

I'd favor Shogun.

Although apparently they fought behind the scenes at Chute Boxe over a puppy. Story is Wand got a new dog from that.

and we’ve all heard about the time Wanderlei KO’d Shogun for a dog.

i’d slightly lean Prime Shogun but it’s much closer to 50/50 in my book.

But we've also all heard about the behind-the-scene-rematch that they had, which Shogun won via KO.

IIRC, Wand won his (the puppy fight) via flying knee, and Shogun KO'd Wand in an unspecified manner.

Nowadays when people tell the story we only ever hear about the Wand win, but back when it happened it was always followed by "but Mauricio won the immediate rematch!"

There also used to be speculations around the fact that in 2005, Rua stated that should PRIDE match-him up with Wanderlei in the upcoming GP, he would "let Silva win"
(that was still when "Silva" meant Wand, not Anderson...)
This statement led many sherdog phrasing specialists to speculate that Rua believed he would be the favorite against Wand.

Someone mentioned on here that he laughed at this when this was mentioned to him and it was the first time he had heard this.

I have literally never heard of this supposed rematch, got any links or old fourm threads to back this claim up?

Tough one. I would agree that Shogun is the more technical fighter. But he is no where near as durable as Wand. So I think in an all out brawl Wand would probably be able to take enough strikes to stay close and overwhelm Shogun.

It would be a great fight to watch.

Prime Shogun all day.

He had the cardio and scrambles to outlast a dangerous one dimensional killer like Wandy, and the finishes to put him away once he tired or made a mistake.

Theoretically he should be able to win about 8 out of 10 times.

The rarely mentioned x factor though, would be the older brother syndrome. If Wand is solidified in Shogun's mind as his superior due to the ranking in the gym and training experiences, then that could change things. Some people can't overcome that mental hiccup.

Back in Wanderlei's prime, Rua's hands weren't quite as developed yet. He relied a lot more on kicks and knees and brawling was not to his best advantage. In 2009-2010 he evolved and became more complete which enabled him to beat Machida. That version of Rua with all his combinations and footwork would beat Wanderlei imo.

In 05 Wanderlei would be too much for him, though even then it would be hard to KO Rua. Look at the flying knee and combo's he ate against a world champ in muay Thai.

Wand was definitely not one dimensional.

He was the best fighter in the world in his weight class and he even defeated and competed with top heavyweights.

He had heavy punches with both hands, had good kicks and had arguably the best Muay Thai Clinch and knees in the game. He was also a BJJ black belt who had great sub defense and great strike defense off his back. In his prime, he was very good at escaping from bottom position. When on top, he had extremely brutal ground and pound and we saw him win by sub against Heavyweight Dirty Bob.

They fought over a dog in training - I think it was non payment or something. Wand eventually KO'd Shogun but this was way before Shogun hit his prime.

Or was this debunked?

Sparring session - going pretty light.
