Throwback PRIDE - Chuck Liddell Vs Young Meth Reem

Guy Mezger was also beating the shit out of Chuck before getting sent to hell. Young Reem was a damn good fighter. He had great striking and submitted Igor Vovchanchyn and Vitor Belfort. The only other person to submit Vitor in nearly 50 fights was prime juiced Jon Jones.

Chuck Liddell had an iron chin and had that dog in heem and knew how to sling haymakers which sent guys to the shadow realm.

The breathing advice is real, I used to stop breathing entirely when hyper focused and I wouldn't even notice. I'm not sure I agree with staying motionless in ice water for hours on end though, sounds like a good way to fall asleep and die.

Not sure how long you have to practice to reach that point.

There's stories of like super advanced Buddhists, daoists and yogis doing crazy feats like that. Withstanding extreme cold.

Probably where Wim Hof learned it, definitely some next level shit lol

Sure, but Wim hof changed him dramatically. He's even said it himself.

Elite breath control is a cheat code to many things in life.

Some people don't even know how to breathe properly and don't realize how much it's affecting their lives until they begin to change it.

Which sounds crazy, like how could someone not know how to breathe properly, but it's more common than you'd think, even in pro fighters.

Being able to control your breath means mastery over your mental states as well. Which is exactly what Alistair was missing most of his career.

It's fear.

Controlling the emotions = the key to everything.

  • As Tyson's trainer, Cus D'Amato used to say,
"Fear is like fire. If you can control it, you can warm your house for the whole winter. But if you can't control it; it will burn your house down."

Chuck was definitely an interesting fighter

It's not like he was the best boxer from a technical pov

But he just had that touch of death and seems like he'd hit punches from weird angles.

And then he had a few hail Mary shots that are less accurate, but if they land, It's done.

The left hook he slept Randleman with was another memorable one.

Someone like rampage with good boxing fundamentals and defense was his kryptonite, but his style would be a problem for a lot of guys, even today.

Not to mention when he got dropped by a kill shot hed just get up and chase after you before you could do anything about it

Except when he backs off too hard, like running away from Kharitonov and getting TKO'd. He always seemed to have a bit of mental weakness, he didn't look one bit like himself fighting Ngannou. He was visibly shaken fighting Arlovski in Holland, but he won. The guillotine on Stipe was another poor decision under pressure, but in fairness he does have a damn good guillotine. It's a shame he never won the big one, I truly believe he was the most skilled heavyweight for a long time, he was just cursed with a bad chin and a bit of a lack of heart. Good to see him hang them up with a shitload of money and all his marbles.
I think he has more heart than some people give him credit for. You don't work like he does if you don't. I am glad you nuanced it (thanks). Sometimes people on here confuse lack of heart with knowing the limitations of having a weak chin and getting cracked.

Any of us who has trained knows that there are unstoppable guys in the gym, but stink at competitions. Those people lack heart/ or a killer instinct. Others choke in the big fights. Reem (probably wisely from a longevity standpoint), falls to bad discipline and technique when he is slightly hurt. It is not a bad strategy when you recover fast, but that is not Overeem.

I do wonder from a cte standpoint, getting ko'd quickly has to be better on the brain than taking all the damage than someone who can take a shot and still moves forward.

That quote sucks. Derivative, pseudo-profound, pompous nonsense. It's where Teddy Atlas gets it from.

People to this day say that Reem was destroying liddell pillar to post until either he gassed or liddell landed a lucky shot. It is crazy. He rocked liddell from the start, liddell clinches and stalls for about a minute, they trade standing, with reem landing a few more, then Liddell knocks him out cold, all in about 3 minutes. It is like the Ryo chonan/Silva fight, it is like people heard something and just repeat it.

Destroying is a stretch but Reem was out classing him for sure. Reem was the more skilled striker and it briefly showed. Chuck was just durable af with an iron chin and he slung haymakers and sent guys to hell. Mezger almost knocked Liddell out too but Chuck came back and melted heem too.

23y Overeem vs 34y Chuck
Very green Overeem showed that ducking and swinging already is enough technique to beat Chuck.
Rampage and Rashad did it also.

People forgot that Chuck was already 38 when his losing streak started and 41 when he retired. He was just way past his prime.

even outclassing is a bit of a stretch. He wobbled liddell hard once and there was about a minute of grappling/stalling. You’re looking about about 1-2 minutes of striking that ended in overeem being knocked out. It wasn’t like Liddell was getting thwomped for a couple rounds before coming back or even that he was getting badly hurt over and over again before pulling it out. Overeem was landing more and definitely rung his bell at the start, but it was over fairly quickly in liddell’s favor.

Chuck didn't shoot for takedowns unless he was being outclassed on the feet.
