Match Report
I went to Whitby Town vs Bamber Bridge yesterday. The attendance was 457 - a little higher than usual, but BB didn't send a lot of fans.
The town is dominated by tourism and I am used to seeing people I've never seen before, with accents from different parts of the country, cheering on Whitby, then never seeing them again. There's also a trend of indigenous people moving north and to smaller places for a reason we all know, you notice them cropping up, but whatever the reason there were more than usual of this kind of person. We only have one main chant leader and wisecracker, but yesterday there was a new one as well. I couldn't see him, but the way he sounded reminded me of Roger from 'The Anniversary' in Fawlty Towers. That actor (Ken Campbell) was from Essex.
So the atmosphere was different from normal even before kick off. Then I suppose Bamber Bridge's gameplan was to come very physically aggressive and impose themselves on the game. They saw our recent form and didn't want any slipups on the road. So they were coming in hard to every contact. There were pushing, pulling, two-footed sliding tackles, elbows and more, and as they were doing it and the ref was very lenient, we started doing it back, and then both sides, but more so Bamber Bridge started diving like they'd been shot with tank shells. The ref was borderline losing control of the game, and he and the Bamber Bridge players were getting mega verbal abuse. The booing at times got so loud they could probably hear it back in Lancashire. Especially their number 10, who was deemed to have been simulating the worst, got deafeningly booed every time he touched the ball.
There were five yellow and one straight red card in the first half. The red was our defender, at 42', for an elbow I think. Amidst the chaos Bamber Bridge were clearly the better team, and although we played brightly and positively, and our distribution and positional play have improved a lot, especially near goal, their marking was very good and they were more incisive on the ball. They scored at 26' and the first half ended 0 - 1.
The second half was calmer and we were able, even a man down, to move up towards the danger zone better at times by going wider. Again the passing ahead of the man has got better recently. We had a few decent or semi-decent shots this half, but Bamber Bridge were never really shook and scored again at 84'. When they were pushing up they were confusing our back line at times with where they were going and it was nervy. Our goalie was getting frustrated with the defenders and I'm glad we didn't concede one or two more. There was only one yellow card in the second half.
The atmosphere was weird this time and Bamber Bridge are one of the better teams in this league, and between that and the red card they took away all our momentum. We didn't do anything particularly badly but still were comfortably beaten. Whitby descend to 11th and Bamber Bridge are sixth. There are 11 teams (4-14) within six points of each other now, so hopefully even some small tweaks can get us upwardly-mobile again.
