Match Report
I went to Whitby Town vs Stockton Town this afternoon. The attendance was a bumper 826. Stockton is pretty close, but it being New Year's Day I wasn't expecting so many. The Stockton fans were in good voice.
This was a disappointing and disjointed performance from Whitby. We did have most of the possession in the first half, but achieved very little with it. One shot on target, and it was a comfortable save for their keeper. Stockton were defending deep, but our attack was blunt. The pass selection was poor, the runs into space were naive and the final touch was inaccurate. Our corners and set-pieces were just awful, the ball was going nowhere near where it needed to be. Still nil-nil at half time to a team above you isn't a disaster.
In the second half though Stockton started to push forward and got more aggressive. They gradually took over the game. For a while our defence (including goalie) has been the strongest part of our team and we have often relied on them to bail us out when the outer players lost control of the run of play. Shane Bland our goalie is great and he probably saved several goals with his interventions, punches, coming out of his box to clear etc. However when Stockton turned up the temperature our defence started to get picked apart. The Stockton players were bypassing our defenders, finding/creating gaps, getting shots on target and we couldn't stop them. The offside trap wasn't working.
Stockton scored at 71 and 77 minutes, and between the goals our midfielder Adam Gell was sent off for a second yellow. There had been some aggro and heavy tackles going back and forth between him and the opposition. He was coming back and helping the flagging defence but went too far once too often. Our goalie was getting frustrated with the back line and shouting and swearing at them as well. To be honest by the end I was happy to only lose by two. Not much positive to take from this match, although at least you can say Stockton are up towards the top of the table. But we will need to improve a lot from this to even stay mid-table.
Stockton are seventh and Whitby are 11th.
