It made me aware that whilst pregnancy can be a wonderful experience, it is also the point in a woman’s life where she is most vulnerable and that mental health issues can arise either without previous indications or pre-existing conditions can dramatically worsen sadly in some extreme cases can progress to a suicide attempt. The experience taught me that as a healthcare professional it would be vital to listen to my gut feeling, despite the patient initially indicating that everything is fine the truth may be that the patient is struggling with a condition they feel too ashamed to mention. I felt the patient was remarkably brave in her honesty about suffering from antenatal depression and describing how she was currently feeling instead of hiding her real emotions. The doctor was able to inform her that services were available to help provide her with support and that she was not a bad mother because she needed additional help.
