Didn't see this posted. The spotters were terrible IMO.

This video’s tough to watch: 34-year-old Russian powerlifter Igor Golushkin, attempting to bench press just over 400 pounds, dropped the bar on his chest during a competition. The resulting impact reportedly crushed his diaphragm and broke several of his ribs, and he later died from a heart concussion, according to Red Hot Russia. A heart concussion, also known as “commotio cordis,” is the stopping of the heart due to sudden trauma.

This was Golushkin’s first “serious” competition, according to Red Hot Russia. During a training session earlier, the bar had slipped as he tried to bench 350 pounds, but the spotters caught it in time. For some reason, notes The Big Lead, they weren’t as attentive when he moved up in weight.

Video here. Again, it’s tough to watch: Golushkin drops the bar on his chest, and you can see the impact cause some brief (but visible) trauma to his diaphragm and ribs.

think this was posted in Mayberry.

Silly and sad death. Horrible spotters

Malanichev dropped 683 lbs on his chest and then deadlifted 400 kg.

Just sayin'.

Fuck those spotters, but really, it was more of a freak accident... definitely didn't see that coming. And Cratos, that's a tasteless joke after a tragic death.

Poor man, it's sad when sport reminds us of our limitatons in such a way. I remember Gene Rychlak lifting at the (i believe) 2005 mr. Olympia, and he dropped the bar on his chest, I was scared for a moment but he seemed to be o.k. almost instantly, guess he had better spotters.

EDIT: The corelation of people with Chael as the avatar and idiotic posts is simply amazing.

They weren't even actually spotting.
The way his thumbs slid off the bar look odd.

Why do horrible spotters seem to be a recurring theme in alot of these accidents?

That vid looks terrible, he starts out with 3 spotters, then the one dude walks away and the other guys doesnt even help leaving one guy spotting one side.

Also, how does your grip slip like that? Ive benched a few times in my life and Ive never had my hands slip like that.

I think Cartos was just pointing out it's a freak accident. That's what I got from his post.

I know people want to blame the spotters, but there's enough blame to go around here. First, as a lifter, you can't simply drop a bar like this and expect the spotters to catch it. You can fail a bench press, but you can't ever let it out of your hands, and this problem should have been addressed immediately after it happened in training.

Second, a meet director can't in good conscience run a meet when he has spotters who aren't capable. It's a sin to even give these two this responsibility.

Finally, the spotters did an awful job and could have save his life had they been more attentive, but that comes with training.

It's really unfortunate, but ineptitude from everyone created the perfect storm of circumstances for it to happen. If you're a lifter, it's worth looking into a meet from a bigger federation with reputable spotters, and one of the advantages to competing in a federation with single- and multi-ply divisions is that the spotters employed have some experience spotting for heavy attempts and are thus in general pretty attentive.

Would spotters have made a difference? He literally just dropped it in a heartbeat.

This is exactly why false grip bench is illegal in most PL federations.

Potentially. The likelihood that spotters catch a bar in free-fall isn't good, but at least getting under it and slowing it down could help save his life. If you're set under the bar, the bar HAS to make contact with you before it makes contact with the lifter.

I was looking at his grip in the video. It didn't look like suicide grip at all to me, that's why I wrote that it looked weird when his thumbs slipped like that.
