These two variations seem to be the most effective at a high level, both in MMA and no-gi. For the power guillotine, you wrap your arm around their neck completely so that their chin is in the crook of your arm (also known as the front naked choke).

The elbow up guillotine is the one Marcelo Garcia does.

Do you use both? Or do you have a favorite? What are the pros and cons of both?

I'm asking because most people who are very good at the guillotine seem to specialize in one or the other, I can't say I've seen anybody use both regularly.

I think it really comes down to your body type. I've got short arms and can't really get my arm far enough inside to go for a power guillotine. Therefore I prefer the elbow up variation. A friend of mine who has very long arms mainly goes for power guillotines or prayer chokes.

High elbow guillotine or prayer choke for me, as well as of course the arm-in and one-arm guillotine variations.

Huh, interesting. I always thought of the arm in guillotine as the power guillotine. To me what you're describing as the power guillotine (FNC) is just the elbow up marcelotine that's gone deeper as opposed to just crushing the treche.

I'm a fan of the Marcelotine. Works very quickly.

The deep arm is extremely hard to get in sub grappling. In MMA it's much more open.

In class I get the power guillotine all the time. It's just not a high percentage finish for me quite yet. I have pretty long arms so I can usually shoot the arm in pretty deep. My problem is getting the tap. Anyone with videos detailing the finish would be very appreciated.

Try the Gracie Breakdown of Jon Jones' fights with Bader and Machida

Hope that helps.

I love the Marcelo style one because I know I have a pretty good shot at getting it any time I can get a hand cupping his chin. It's very fast from there.

what is the proper grip with marcelo's style?

My fav variation is the prayer choke, fast and extremly powerful and doesnt crank the guy's neck.

Just rewatched the video from Bader/Jones. The way Jon finished it is exactly the way I try to finish. Most often it is from top half too which is the same as the video. Since I have long arms I shoot the arm deep and then try to push my choking arm hand upwards to seal the choke. I think the mistake I may be making is that instead of sprawling my weight on top of the guy, I think I sprawl in the same way I do to finish an arm triangle. I get up on the ball of my feet and lean forward on my toes. I need more top pressure and just more overall tightness to really make the choke work. Also liked the detail of putting my opposite arm over their shoulder, I will have to try that as well.

Thanks alot man gonna look for the guillotine all night tonight in class have a tournament next weekend!

Same as the seatbelt grip. As crazy as it is, there aren't really any good free videos of Marcelo teaching it.

This is the best one on his guillotine not on MGinaction.com

this really clears it up. move is almost unfair

I came back to this thread to say tonight I focused on the Marcelotine in class and I hit it twice against a very good training partner that normally taps me 2-3 times per round. I got him with it once from bottom half guard as he tried to pass to side and he insta tapped. Much faster than when I hit a normal guillotine. The other time I set it up from top half guard and then finished it from mount. Felt great! Now I added a new sub just days before I compete this weekend. Thanks f12
