I can certainly talk about Native poverty, at least in the way it's tied to my own research with education. I was also thinking I could do something about the history of boarding schools specifically, which is less dry and also rollllls right into conversations about poverty and other pervasive, systemic issues.

My understanding of it is limited, but from what I was taught in high school those boarding 'schools' for Native kids were nothing short of a prison for kids. Torture, rape, teaching them to forget their culture, stealing kids from families. A real dark stain on Canadian history. No idea how it was down south in America, I can only imagine just as bad.

Thanks and thanks! Fortunately we have an entire forum to make bad drunk jokes in.
Bro I've been here a while and I've just never been able to get in to the OT, and I've really tried. I'm a War Room/Sports Bar guy. I like my rude potty humor interspersed between intelligent discourse, or at least light-hearted sports-centric trash talk. I just need to steer clear of the "forbidden jokes".

Yeah, all that and more. A lot of my research has dealt with boarding schools from a labor perspective. They used the kids to do all manner of things- textile manufacturing, trade construction, various farming and agricultural practices- and made who knows how much money off it. Worked em to the bone out in the unforgiving sun/cold, sometimes to death, and pocketed the profits. I've been able to track down where some it it went with one particular school and am going to be trying to get an article published within the next year or two, depending on when I finish. I started traveling to lecture about this topic last year and it's been really cool.
I think i'll try to work something up for this to put in the sticky. The more I think about it, that's probably my best bet.

I didn't know they worked them. Hell im not surprised. The whole "school" front was probably exactly that.

I hear you. I know there's plenty of smart folks in the OT, but the overall discourse is a bad combination of LCD and vapid. Talking shit works much better when there's some substance behind it.

I’m liking it so far. Congrats @Cubo de Sangre, the rules look fair to me and there seem to be some good choices in the poll. I’ll vote later. And thanks @Fawlty for keeping our president on his toes in an intelligent manor.

This sub (and the presidency) would be kind of boring without a little bit of thoughtful opposition right? Someone’s gotta make the President answer tough questions.
@Fawlty Acosta is the perfect choice. :D

I'm down for history debates and whatnot

I mean writing a 35 page Historiography on the Malleus Maleficarum and a 40 pager on USMC counterinsurgency efforts in Vietnam has certainly helped me IRL hahaha

I hope you share the former with all your religious friends and family.

@Cubo de Sangre I think you should consider banning all Left-leaning posters. They add nothing of value anyway. It would eliminate the need for debate and we could start going forward with making progress. You could instantly become GOAT POTWR. Just something to think about.
So you just want to live in your little bubble and block out the rest of reality? If it wasn't you posting I'd think someone was being sarcastic. The rules being discussed are to weed out arguments like yours.

It's fun arguing with them, but at the end of the day we need to solve problems. And the number one problem is the political Left. So why not solve the problem for good while you have the chance? I say go ahead and do it. ;)
WE need to solve problems? Oh please, we're just a forum, leave the problem solving to the President. Ohhhh, maybe you're right... <{Heymansnicker}>

Great!

Any controversial/interesting topics that you might disagree on with our other history buffs?

@Limbo Pete @Kafir-kun @Pupi @InternetHero
that depends
Colonialism/Imperialism and it's long lasting effects

Who was really to blame for WWI and it's start (I blame Austria Hungary pretty strongly personally)

all the false flags US wars have been started on (gulf of Tonkin, USS Maine, Lusitania, Mexican American War and Lincoln's 'Spot' speech, Andrew Jackson invading Florida after 'seminole attacks' etc..)

the whole Israel/Palestine issue, particularly from the end of colonialism till the Suez Crises

how exactly SIV became HIV in Africa (bushmeat theory, tainted Polio vaccine by the Belgians in Congo, guys banging apes? haha)

Many things involving the Holocaust (not did it happen, of course it did), but like how much the Average German knew, how much did the German and Italian Catholic Churches know, or were they sympathetic towards it, how much US corporations knew (particularly Coca Cola which introduced Fanta to Germany, GM), how Bayer got away scot free from making Zyclon B, etc...

I would absolutely love a "change my mind" kind of thing.

We'd be hard pressed to find people who would be willing to consider changing their minds though.

Don't mean to speak for him, but I know this is an area @Pupi specializes in. I know a fair bit myself. I bet we could have some good discussion here.

@Cubo de Sangre I'd like some clarification on the rule about postings meant to be humorous. Now I have been carded twice recently (my only infractions in my seven or so years here how about that?) for admittedly poor attempts at humor so I think I've got a good handle on what is clearly out of bounds.

However, I think a humorous retort can often be a stronger rebuttal than a more serious reply. Could we say that as long as a post intended to be humorous is related to the subject matter and at least attempts to make a point it's allowed?

Of course I understand that if the joke ends with something like "so there you stupid cocksucker" it's over the line but I just wanted to be clear on that rule.

Nice list. That's plenty to work with. Let's see if we can get something set up.

What I'm hearing is that you're already right about everything. :D

Seriously though, is there anything you're on the fence with? I waffle on the death penalty. But these days I like it in cases of murder. Maybe I've thought it through too much to actually change my mind. So a good topic might be one you have little exposure to?

Now we're talkin'!

As far as the Presidential stickies go, if you're making a point that applies to the discussion and doing so with humor then that's cool. If you're making a tangential joke just to make it then that's probably not gonna be cool. There will be some gray area, but I think most of us can see the difference most of the time. Well...hopefully. :D

No, that's not what I'm saying. You're taking it out of context.

Consider holding symposiums on the following:
  • Death penalty vs. chemical castration—Safe, legal, and practical solutions to the :eek::eek::eek:phile problem
  • ScapeGOATs—Who are the biggest problems society faces?
  • Is there a political solution to Americans' irreconcilable differences?

LOL you say "you should consider banning all left-leaning posters, they add nothing of value anyway, solve the problem for good, thread suggestion-top 10 reasons to ban the left" etc.

When confronted with the obvious trollness of this instead of going "yeah I was just fucking around" you go with "you're taking it out of context" LMAO.

Interesting early litmus test for you President @Cubo de Sangre, does this guy (whose name implies troll) seem like an obvious troll (or complete idiot) to you and the represent type of thing that needs to be cleaned up? He sure seems like that to me.

I've always been cool with you Cubo and I'm not trying to bust your balls here but looks like a duck, etc. and I am interested in your reaction here.

Bein' President gonna be tough dawg.;)

Look Mr. Yellow Card, you're the obvious troll here. You cut and paste trite nonsense from your Tumblr all day, but I never complain about it. Now here you go with the personal insults because you've got thin skin. Same reason you got carded twice recently. I get my opinion, you get yours. Deal with it.

@Cubo de Sangre This is a test for you, because you're gonna have individuals like the one above begging you to curate the discussion in their favor all day. The solution is to ignore them.
