Post an Underrated Movie

Short Eyes (1977)

The best prison movie that hardly anybody has ever heard of. Directed by American Me (another great prison movie) producer Robert M. Young (Edward James Olmos, a frequent collaborator, borrowed a bit from him and the movie in his directorial debut). Features a fantastic soundtrack from the GOAT movie soundtrack man Curtis Mayfield. And a strong ensemble cast including Bruce Davison, Joseph Carberry, Jose Perez, Don Blakely, Nathan George and Shawn Elliott. Legendary character actor Luis Guzman also makes his movie debut in a small role and Joe Pesci has a non-speaking role.

Was definitely an interesting 70s time capsule. Back then you had a lot of these fairly low budget movies that could be carried almost entirely on the shoulders of (fairly) young and hungry actors and still make an impact (Davison in Short Eyes, Paul Winfield in Sounder, William Devane in Rolling Thunder, Harvey Keitel in Fingers and Mean Streets, Carol Kane in Hester Street, so on).

Slingblade is pretty great. It has a cult following, but I never see it mentioned on here.

Most of these arent underrated, most of them have quite favorable reviews

I'd guess The Ghost and Darkness, Prisoners and Nacho Libre do. I'd guess the rest have average to low ratings.

But not many people talk about any of them a whole lot except Prisoners some.

A Soviet tank in Afghanistan gets separated from its platoon. It quickly gets a Taliban problem, but shit's a bit hairy within its crew too.

I love this film. People gonna complain about Americans (Including Jason Patric and Stephan Baldwin) playing Russians, but I like the performances and this being an 80's American film gives it some novelty what with how the Taliban would end up on America's shitlist (This isn't exactly American/Taliban propaganda though and it's more about the deterioration of the crew). Plus it's a film about the Soviet-Afghan war with a T-55 rolling around so it feels special. I think there's only this and 9th Company for films about this setting? The Beast was directed by Kevin Reynolds who would go on to direct the similarly underrated Waterworld

House of the Devil 87% RT

This Is The End 83% RT

Cabin in the Woods 91% RT

A movie has to have mediocre or bad reviews to be underrated

These movies all have good reviews that almost perfectly match up with the quality of the movie

Freejack starring Emilio Estevez, Rene Russo, Mick Jagger.

I mention this everytime I complain about Hollywood not having enough sexy Deep South accents in their films and how I'm reduced to jacking it to Slingblade

YOURE WELCOME

It was supposed to be a miniseries that was cut down to a movie. I hope somehow the whole thing exists somewhere and will be on the internet oneday.

edit: full movie is on youtube.
