Position Before Submission?

I think the idea behind PBS is to get n00bs away from over-aggressively attacking and out of a a wholly submission oriented mindset. The sub is the flashy, sexy finishing technique. Its the grapplers KO or Homerun. Guard passes, sweeps, and positional control simply dont have the allure of the sub. How often have you seen newb grappler in class going for the sub like a spazz/madman? And how often do they actually get it? Usually they just end up gassing and getting subbed themselves. A more seasoned grappler knows that a submission is usually the end result of a sequence of techniques that has maximized their advantages.
Personally, I think it is amazing watching two high-ranked jiu-jitsu grapplers flowing from position to position. It is like their minds are several steps ahead of their physical bodies. A fight between two skilled grapplers reminds me of a capoeira jogo in how the players react to each other.

As one progresses, he becomes more technical and just doesn't automatically go for the submission. Besides, in a tourney that you can't get a submission, if yu keep geting the dominant position, you still win

You can be submitted in any position, and from any position, especially true with the gi.

you knew what i meant but since you are being difficult let me rephrase it: Get into a position where you are HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be submitted/struck before attempting a submission. Good god some people on the internet are just wiseasses for the sake of being an wiseass.

I'm not being a wise ass, just some people make the mistake of believeing that certain positions are invulnerable.

but how far do you take this? how far do you take this version of 'position before submission'? after you've passed guard into side control..... mount? high mount... take the back?

When you have a position which gives you control over opponent and will allow you a smooth, easy entry into a submission hold. It doesnt have to be the most dominant position (top/rear mount) though these positions will offer greater control. You can have good control from a neutral position like the guard and you can have spotty control (though this less common) from the mount.

There are no guarantess of successfully completing any submission from any position, but the intelligent grappler knows the odds of success are higher when attempting the sub from a good position and that failing to complete the sub from a good position will likely leave the grappler in position not significantly worse or even allow for another sub attempt.

i think of it as the difference between white blue and purple belts.....white and blue is jsut surviving and learning positions and purple is when you start perfecting your bubs

The first paragraph is well said.

Looking at your second paragraph though, what I was saying before, just for discussion's sake, is that if you feel there is one position that yields the highest sub percentage, if we take the 'position before submission' ideolgy to an extreme, we would find ourselves in this "master position" everytime before attempting our subs. Why go to a sub from a position that we can have an 80% chance of either completing the sub, or not losing position after attempting it, when we can get to a poistion that gives us a 90% chance of the same?
