Well, I think the liberal side has drifted hard into the idea that learning to express oneself is an end in itself as a political act. Which is a self that can be expressed and fleshed out through consumption. The alt right is a reaction, of other oppressed people, to that ideal as represented by the oppressed liberals into what is essentially the greasers vs the jocks.
Yep I'd agree that's pretty much it, I think the alt right is an inevitable consequence of the socially liberal but economically conservative capitalist mind-set that's dominated much of the mainstream in recent years. If economic oppression is glossed over and instead oppression is characterised as only being the result of bigotry then it makes sense that straight white men who don't find a slot for themselves on the liberal side will find it elsewhere.
Call me cynical as well but I think this is very much a deliberate thing, creating as aggressive a partisan environment as possible helps to make sure that the status quo economically remains the same and that's really what those at the top care about most.
