Polish Power?

It is interesting how he was a submission machine in early times of his career

https://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Jan-Blachowicz-25821

Jan Błachowicz' record is 29 wins, 9 losses, 1 Draw.

Of Jan's wins, the breakdown is

9 by KO (31%)
9 by Sub (31%)
11 by Dec (38%)

Of Jan's losses, the breakdown is

2 by KO (22%)
2 by Sub (22%)
5 by Dec (56%)

Overall, Jan has a 74% win rate (62% by finish, but only 31% by KO), but loses 26% of the time.
He has not some freak knockout artist, which some people make him out to be.

By contrast, Alex Pereira's MMA record is 7 wins 2 losses, 0 draws.

Of Alex' wins, the breakdown is

6 by KO (86%)
0 by Sub (0%)
1 by Dec (14%)

Of Alex' losses, the breakdown is

1 by KO (50%)
1 by Sub (50%)
0 by Dec (0%)

Overall, Alex has a 78% win rate (86% by finish, all by KO), but loses 22% of the time.
Alex is clearly the KO artist in this matchup.

So the matchup is pretty even, win / loss %-wise.

In kickboxing, in 40 pro fights, Alex won 33, lost 7, which is an 82.5% win record, losing only 17.5% of the time.
Of his 33 wins, 21 were by KO, which is a 64% KO ratio.

Age-wise, Alex is 36, Jan is 40, so the reflex factor is likely going to be in Alex' favor.
% don't mean a thing when Alex has had 1/3 of the fights.

Would you rather have 80% of 100 bucks or 50% of 200 bucks?

Anyway. I'd love Jan to win this. Soooo hard to say at such an age though. 4 years ago I'd have taken Jan, but still with damage to his nose.
Now. As hard as Stipe vs. Jones.

Alex vs Jan is a great matchup. Jan will try and physically bully Alex, like he did against Izzy. I'm predicting Jan to win by decision.

It does mean something.

It could also be argued that Jan's record doesn't mean a thing, since MMA fighters are not professional kickboxers, where Alex has had 40 professional kickboxing fights, and still has double the number (and double the %) of KOs that Jan does, in a tougher genre (striking-wise), with bigger gloves to boot.

Understand your point, but see above.
Alex has triple the percentage of KOs in MMA, but less volume.
Alex has double the percentage of KOs in Glory Kickboxing, and more volume.

Agree that Jan's chances would be better if younger. He still has a chance.

I'm rooting for Alex, and it will be interesting to see the intangibles.
In age, punch is the last thing to go.

Jan will still have his power, but no longer the speed.
Meanwhile, Alex will still have his power, much greater than Jan's, and should have a speed advantage as well.

Time will tell.

Yeah I’ve thought the same thing, especially when looking at his UFC record. He has 5 T/KOs, one of which was a knee injury and three of them were guys not known for great chins.

He’s not pillow fisted by any means but I also wouldn’t call him a KO artist.

Jan has those hard strikes that don't knock you out but they brutalize you. I don't know the mechanic behind the punches but watching guys hit by it looks painful but I don't feel like they are getting KO'd from one strike.

The only person who truly made me believe in 'Polish Power' was this guy back in his WSM days. He was a sight to behold back in his WSM days. Truly charismatic and showed inhuman determination, guts and mental strength. Too bad he sucks at MMA (he was out of his prime already when he left WSM to pursue a career in MMA)

It's rare, but sometimes people awaken an inner potential to be a finisher. Khabib for example went from fifty-fifty to an 100% finish rate after becoming champion, and that was with harder, championship level opponents. While not to the same extent, Blachowicz made his reputation brutally knocking and both Corey Anderson and Reyes, and also while not managing the finish, so did he still badly hurt Ankalaev.

Polish Power is a catchy alliteration. Pereira should have something similar, like Brazilian Bomb.

While Jan may not be a constant KO artist, he does have a lot of power to batter his opponents into living death, such as Dominick Reyes.

Also, when he KOs people, it's glorious

i

Luke Rockhold has no chin, when Bisping KOd him it was glorious too.
