MMA can either be the most exciting sport, or the most boring sport of all time. There are times where i rather watch baseball. Those moments are wall n stall situations. This is by far the most boring moment in MMA. Its not even close.

How do we fix it? Easy. Successful TDD should count as a point. If you shoot in on my crotch and i stuff your little peahead under my ball sack, you just embarrassed yourself and should lose points. This alone will stop these wrestling vermins from trying that again. Defence should be awarded. I never buy ufc ppv because of how inconsistent this sport is. I much rather watch a 12 round jab fest in boxing than wall n stall. And im a gsp fan. I have no problem with grappling. But wall n stall is the death of this sport. Aldo won that fight.

my solution would be that once you start grappling, if 30-60 seconds pass and fighter A has not done any meaningful damage or advanced his position, the referee separates them.

this would force the grappler to use 100% effort in going for a TD and passing.

also they should allow kicks/knees to grounded opponents. it would have benefits for both the guy on top and the guy defending... either way we'd see more finishes.

I’ve seen this suggested a few times and put simply, it’s just not a well thought out suggestion.

To start, one doesn’t win or lose an allotted amount of points per action, unless there’s a deduction for a foul. So you can’t say a takedown defended equals 1 point, not how it works.

Next point, if you’re going to score takedown defense, you have to score all defense meaning blocks and avoiding strikes as well. That means in theory a fighter could win a fighter attempting 0 strikes, takedowns, or submissions. That in and of itself should make anybody reconsider scoring defense.

Defense is a reward in and of itself as it allows a fighter to stay in the fight. It should never be score, unless you want to have even more tentative and boring fights.

I don’t know if I agree with you that just defending a takedown should award points. I think the offender shouldn’t be rewarded for failed takedowns.. But you won me over with your Maldini AV

There's already a reward for defending a takedown and it's preventing your opponent from getting a more advantageous position.

That fight sucked, but Aldo barely threw any offense after defending and definitely did not win it.

I feel like this would be used as a ploy to remove grappling from MMA. If the defender ends up in a dominant position due to his or her defense/scramble, sure, but if it results in a neutral position, no.

agreed yes this is like MMA gerrymandering.

Nope.

"Takedowns" honestly mean so little.
Some are incredible, some are purely off balance flukes.
BJJ guys are happy to be taken down.

Defending from bottom, hip escapes, reversals, and finish attempts should weigh much more than stalling wrestlers.

I don't think you need to give points for TD defense, but wall n stalling or blanketing with next to zero strikes or sub attempts should weighted very lightly in the scoring. It shouldn't matter how much "control time" you have if you did nothing with it, if the other guy landed the more significant shots on you, you should lose the round. Control time is such an irrelevant stat to keep track of in the first place, all that matters are strikes and sub attempts.

They can solve this problem by removing "position control" from the scoring system.

If the spirit of the wrestler is broken, judge should stop the fight by phycological tko

It's fine the way it is now. It's damage focused not control focused and they separate wall and stall and lay and pray now. Just not every ref or location is up to the updated criteria yet. They may still be used to letting wall and stall and lay and pray play out. The main judging criteria is damage. They don't allow stalling positions out and stalling strategies anymore. Takedowns aren't scored highly anymore unless you do something with it. Lots of fighters recently loss even though they had multiple takedowns in the round because they weren't able to do any damage after the takedowns.

Only time control is scored now is when there is no damage to judge. Like Aldo vs Merab for example is the most recent example, even though a lot of parts in that fight should've been separated because it was a wall and stall strategy and that isn't allowed anymore.

Holding someone against the cage is stalling, its like butt scooting, they force fighters to stand up. They should see holding someone against the cage as stalling, u get 20 seconds if ur not advancing position, reset them.

its not a full on fight, its a sport with rules, so yes, stalling and any boring parts should be heavily frowned upon.

And also Aldo outlanded Merab, should've been a 29-28 Aldo win.

Agree for the most part. Control should be lightly weighed and not count for much, but it shouldn’t count for nothing either. It should be pretty easily overcome with any meaningful offense. It should also however be enough to sway the round if it was otherwise even or that’s all that happened.
