The 80s atmosphere and cinematography is a capture of the times and is mostly flawless. It has a visual and mood edge that Ronin doesn't.

Ronin is a good movie, dont get me wrong. But it doesn't stand out in any particular way other than being a fun movie.
It's not a capture of the times. I spent my summers in South Florida in the 1980's.
It's a capture of a small sub-culture that existed that's blown out of proportion, which is what makes it funny.

I would say its obviously very stylised but really I think thats a lot of the appeal, Ronin just isnt a very similar film at all being more of a lower key thriller attempting a decent degree of realism.

De Palma's best stuff was in the eatrly 80's for me, Dress to Kill, Blow Out, Scarface and Body Double when he had more unique style to his work.

Another great movie expert chiming in.
Tarantino loves Blow Out like his life depended on it. I have yet to see it.

So that subculture did exist is what you are saying

I dont get the argument anyway. Road house and Scarface are better movies because.....they are worse movies but more iconic?

Something can be higher quality and still not work as good.
Dave Mathews is musically superior to Motley Crue, but the crue is a superior band.
A disposable razor works better than a straight razor.....does this make sense?

Not really, no.

Still need to see de palma's other 80s stuff.

Scarface is probably the most conventional of those 4 films with De Palma not writting it were as the others are more a mix of Hitchcock thrillers(Blow Out definitely the most Hitchcock like) and Italian Giailo films but with higher production values than the latter.

Not in the way it's projected in that movie, which is why it's funny.
It's almost like a parody of Miami in the early 80's despite being filmed in the early 1980's.

Perhaps a poll is in order. Scarface vs Ronin
Scarface is a million times better than Ronin
No nead for a poll.
I'm saying Ronin was done better from an art snob perspective. Very few people on an MMA forum are going to have a clue as to what is good cinematography past the basics. This is why film critics love terrible movies.

Ronin? I don't know it never seemed like the art snob kind of movie. When I think art snob movie I think of something like Mulholland drive or phantom thread.

Did you mean 70s
No, I meant 1980's. It was filmed in 1982-83. I'm pointing out that the portrayal of Miami in the 80's in that movie comes off like it would in a movie filmed much later that overloads you with all the iconic shit if that time period.
I feel like this conversation is going WAY over your head.

How old are you?

It's not an art snob movie. I'm saying that it's filmed better than scarface, and that a casual film fan probably would not understand that. Then I said that is often why critics like terrible movies.

You are not smart. This conversation is over.

No I get what you are saying although I don't think there is anything wrong with a little exaggeration. As was said it's about the style the movie creates.
