NBA Playoffs thread - Scientists unite

So after the chase down foul on Caruso that was reviewed, the announcers were debating whether it was a flagrant or not and Burke said there was no play on the ball and then rules analyst Steve javy came in and said that making a play on the ball is not one of the criteria for a flagrant foul. And sure enough when they announced that it was a common foul they went down the checklist of the 3 areas of criteria and determined it only met 1 of the 3.

Is this new? I could of sworn the whole thing was subjective and that there wasn’t a direct rule that says it must meet 2 of 3 criteria?

Also I was always under the impression that making a play on the ball was taken into consideration. So I just googled the nba’s rule book on what criteria is considered for flagrant fouls and found this source from 2023 (not sure if it has changed since then) but sure enough #2 is whether it was a legit basketball play :

1. The severity of the contact
2. Whether or not the player was making a legitimate basketball play (e.g., whether a player is making a legitimate effort to block a shot; note, however, that a foul committed during a block attempt can still be considered flagrant if other criteria are present, such as recklessness and hard contact to the head)
3. Whether, on a foul committed with a player’s arm or hand, the fouling player wound up and/or followed through after making contact
4. The potential for injury resulting from contact (e.g., a blow to the head and a foul committed while a player is in a vulnerable position)
5. The severity of any injury suffered by the offended player
6. The outcome of the contact (e.g., whether it led to an altercation).”

Personally I think the criteria listed above should just be viewed as general guidance and not some rigid 2/3 type bs since it’s all subjective anyways. But since when did not making a play on the ball get removed from the nba rule books?

I think KD will make a major impact on whatever team he goes to. However, the Suns are expecting a hefty haul for him and they’re in for a rude awakening. No one is giving up the farm for a 37 year old.

Exactly.

KD just falling on the Rockets' laps or even in a straight-up trade for Green would be amazing. But all realistic scenarios have him being traded for the top 3-4 players on the team. Fuck all that.

Smart move by Haliburton to utilize film of the best player since Kobe.

The average fan is retarded. KD on the Spurs or Rockets would be insane and definitely a favorite to win a Championship.

KD could help turn a team into a contender if you don’t have to give up a lot for him.

Yes, KD with Wemby could be really nice, depending what they give up. I’d love to see him on the spurs tbh.

With the Rockets, they’d likely have to give up some good pieces. Their depth, youth and athleticism is their strength. I feel like KD would age out, and they wouldn’t quite be good enough to win the chip.

KD has been an insanely good player. But he missed he playoffs offs with Devin Booker, Beal and Nurkic, they went 34-46, that’s sustained failure. If he’s valuable enough to win a chip and give up multiple pieces for he should be doing better with that line up. Especially if he’s a top 10 all time player, as some people seem to think he is.

No team is trading a contending team for KD. He was traded for Bridges and Cam Johnson, and Cam Johnson's upside was supposed to be higher than he's shown. The 4 picks were in theory filler because the Suns weren't gonna have good picks anyways.

If the Spurs trade Fox or Castle or Fox and the #2 pick this year or some combination its good compensation. Add in some firsts that won't be worth much in the next 2-3 years and its a fair trade. Mikal Bridges just got traded for 5 firsts.

The Rockets already have JSJ, Green, and potentially Whitmore on the table. Sengun too but his price is much higher. That's not including the boatload of picks they have. Unrelated, but I genuinely hope the Rockets trade for Gobert so ANT has more talent. I'd love to see McDaniel, Gobert, and say Dillingham for Sengun, JSJ and Whitmore but I doubt the Rockets do it, even though they've shown they don't think Green, JSJ, or Sengun are cornerstones for their franchise.

The Suns were hurt all year, hired a bum coach, and had zero depth. It's not KD's responsibility to build a roster. That's on the Suns. All 3 of those players are great players. Unfortunately the NBA is a team game. Btw, Nurkic fucking sucks now.

Being a top 10 all time player doesn't mean he's a top 10 all time player right now, that's an absurd thing to say. He's a top 20 player in the league and he's on the downside, but his downside is 25+ PPG on insane efficiency. If he were to play with even Cade Cunningham or something you'd see the primary player go bananas with that spacing.

Only one of em can even play basketball so it'd be 1v3

Indy is going to be good a long time - deep enough to start packing players for elite players and a good enough team to attract them .
