Place to train in Philly?

I train at BJJ United, just started bjj last month. First, I'm gonna say that any of the schools here you really can't go wrong (Daddis/Philly MMA is affiliated with us and team lloyd irvin so we see a lot of guys back and forth).

the head instructors are jared weiner (lloyd irvin's first black belt) and wilson reis, even though wilson is out of town as a coach for team cruz on TUF. of course by the title, we've got a lot of bjj going around, but we've got muay thai, no-gi, wrestling and kettlebell classes as well.

to be completely honest with you i've forgotten how much it costs (i'm 15) to be here, but i do know that the staff is great, very accommodating, there's always going to be discounts to your tuition depending on your situation i'm guessing.

the facility is about regular sized, big mat, locker rooms, storage with muay thai pads and things, space with chairs and a tv up front.

everyone is a cool guy here. i had visited another school in jersey, ricardo almeida, and i almost went there, but the atmosphere there and here are very different. it was a little more businesslike there, here it's like everyone knows everybody. i was nervous for about 10 minutes in my first class. but everyone is chill, we get all ages and people from everywhere. i think i might owe jared some pushups though, because i may have jinxed the flyers. :x

this place does like a trial and you can see if you like it or not. it'd be super cool to see you there, but again you can't go wrong with any school around here.

BJJ United has a beautiful gym. You take one look at that huge mat and want to roll all day on it.

So I went to all the schools mentioned except for BJJ United. It's too far and one of the heavyweights from Balance warned me about a lot of drama and gym politics and whatever. I think the gym with the most complete MMA program thet I went to was Brazen. They have good wrestling for a striking and boxing gym. I'm signed up for a month and if I decide to continue I will do the year at $115/month. To good to pass up. Thanks for the info guys and good luck training. I should be fighting in August in PA close to Philly if all goes to plan. 2 more ammy fights then pro.

Nice, best of luck with your fights man!

I think Maxercise still teaches BJJ in center city on what they call jewlers row. Not sure, whenever I'm there I go up to BJJ United because they're a TLI affiliate.

edit: don't wanna start anything. :)

if that happened it must have been before i've been going to classes, only real issue was when it was closed for several weeks because of flooding.... maybe they were trying to, you know, make it seem like something was going on? :icon_neut But if it is too far, too far. Let us know when you're fighting, f12 always supports its guys.

JW did an unreal job turning that around. It happened twice and he didn't let it get him down at all. He fought back and had the most amazing team day ever for their 10th anniversary.

Unreal guy who ALWAYS has your back no matter who you are in the food chain. One of the classiest and welcoming guys in jiu jitsu and amazing competitor.

I never hear anything bad out of that place unlike a lot of gymms I get to visit. Well the only bad thing I hear out of the place are Wilson's jokes LOL.

Yeah, It's just too far and I already have a strong bjj game. I'm a see for myself kind of guy so I didn't pay it too much mind. Probably should have kep it to myself. Same guy said Brazen was only like 3 months old or something LOL. I guess they have been around a while like a year or so and they had something like 6 guys fight on one card. I'll put up some sparing and training vids. Good stuff, guys. I shall see you on the FIGHT SIDE!!

Thanks again.

Hey guys....I stumbled on this thread while doing research on MMA schools in Philly. I am originally from Philly,
moved to Dallas and am now back. Thanks for all of the great info in this thread.

I was training at Daddis Fight Camps before I left a year ago, and to be honest, I loved it and do feel they are the harvard of MMA schools
in the region. I mean no disrespect to any other schools when I say that because I'm sure they are all great. I personally just think that is
just a fact from having paid attention to the MMA scene in the region for the past 10 years. I remember when Eddie Alvarez was training
with Brad Daddis and Steven Haigh. I went to watch before I started my training and had a feeling he was going to turn out to be
a superstar. He picked up everything the instructors said and got it on the first try like he'd done it a million times.

I know Steve split off and was doing Fight Factory somewhere else. Does anyone know where?

I also trained at Balance prior to that and enjoyed the BJJ. I am a believer in "you get what you pay
for". Both those schools have long time reputations and accolades as well that are undeniable. BUT...
moving here after spending a ton of money on the move, etc... might force me

I am impressed with all of the Philly school records on here. Ya can't find that everywhere. I remember The Daddis Team going 9-0 on
an MMA card when I first started! Was very cool. And, to hear some of these other records gives me the impression that where ever I end up, I'll
be in good hands.

I went to a team day training at Lloyd Irvin's in MD with the Daddis crew and met the guys from BJJ United who were super cool too and had
some slick technique.

One question for you guys regarding affiliations....is Balance still a Relson school? I am pretty sure Daddis and BJJ United are still with Lloyd from
Lloyd's e-mails. Any of the other schools have affiliations and if so can you guys tell me what they are?

I was a new blue belt who now has the technique of an advanced white belt lol. That's what happens w/ 8 months of no training I suppose. So, I am
excited to get back on the horse and get my Muay Thai back up to speed as well. Hoping to be competition ready for at least some no-gi tournaments
this fall.

That said, I am coming here on unemployment:( So, while I have some promising interviews lined up, I can't afford
the upper echelon schools/fees at the moment. I will check out some of the other schools as well and get a taste for it all. I will def pop in Brazen Boxing
to check it out.

I'll will go in armed with more knowledge about each school from this thread so thanks again guys!

Hi Iceman, yep Balance is still a Relson school. Best of luck with training!

I train at Brazen and I must say I love it. I've been studying martial arts in general for 13 years. Been involved with MMA for the past 6 years. And I've been at a few different places over that time period. Between the instruction, price, convenient schedule, and over all atmosphere I must say this place is a really good place to train. One of the things I liked about it right off the bat was how well rounded the classes were. I've always found a lot of schools are very good in one category and slacking in others. Brazen isn't like that. I really like this place and I hope to see you there! Good luck with which ever path you choose!

I thought Daddis was average compared to Balance, Fight Firm, and Brazen. It was a nicer facility than Balance, but Balance had better instruction and was less aggressive with the sales approach. Josh was the man. I've trained at a bunch of places since college and as an actual fighter I just don't see what the hype is (no offense). I don't want to start a thread or gym war (as I'm still new to my gym), but I just wasn't feeling them.

Marco, thanks for the kind words... Just be sure not to say anything negative about other schools. We want to avoid that can of worms. It just starts problems. That being said, we have had quite a bit of success against the :icon_lol: "upper echelon" schools. I will attach some videos and you can be the judge. Remember, we once thought the world was flat.

Damn man. Left hand compliment much. Just keep it real and LOL at the name drop with the affiliation questions. I'm a 22 fight pro boxer  (from Philly), just learning the MMA game and I know what you doing. Love your school or hate another, but don't try to make Brazen sound like the Family Dollar of Philly MMA schools. Just keep it real.

HAHA... That bol who was the BELLATOR tryout winner got KTFO by Felder from Brazen. Left on a stretcher. Seems pretty upper echelon to me wether you employed or not. Some top 10 in the world ranked boxers train there and some tough young MMA fighters.

Aint nothing wrong with loyalty, but don't be fake as $#!T

Looks like the Lloyd Irvin affiliation aint such a good thing theses days.

To answer the question, yes, Balance studios is still affiliated with Relson. Phil and Rick got their Black belts from him and he still comes by a couple times a year.

When I was in Philly in 2011 I dropped in at Alliance PA in West Chester. Good guys - good training.

It was an obvious name drop for Lloyd Irvin that I quoted from a old post.

BJJU. Jared and his crew are top notch.
