An XL bully dog has been put down after fatally attacking a 10-year-old girl in North Yorkshire last week.

Savannah Bentham, from the Malton area, was fatally attacked by her family’s pet dog at home on Friday. On Tuesday, the dog was identified as an XL bully and was euthanised by a vet, North Yorkshire police said.


Police said the dog had been with the family for four years, had a certificate of exemption under the new legislation and had been neutered. An autopsy will take place on the animal to help determine if there were any medical factors involved, they said.

Savannah’s family, in a statement issued by North Yorkshire police on Monday, said: “We are utterly shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah. We can’t believe we have lost our wonderful girl who we love so much. We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we struggle to come to terms with our loss. We ask that our family’s privacy is respected while we grieve.”

Police were called by the Yorkshire ambulance service at about 4.15pm on Friday. Despite the efforts of medics and a member of the public who came to the family’s aid, Savannah died at the scene.

An investigation is under way and the force said one line of inquiry was the dog’s behaviour. Police said all indications suggested the attack was out of character, and that the girl and the pet had had a close and loving relationship.

A postmortem was held on Sunday and an inquest will open shortly. North Yorkshire police urged people not to speculate about what had happened and “to respect the family’s wish for privacy to grieve in peace”.

A couple of weeks ago I was walking my dog when a pit got out of a yard and charged at me and my dog. It circled around us for a few seconds with me yelling at it. Became clear it wasn't going away and was about to attack so I shot it in the face. Dog ran back where it came from.

Called the cops out and they said I did what needed to be done. I watched animal control walk the dog to its owners vehicle so he could take it to the vet and it was missing a good chunk of its nose. I'm pretty sure the dog lived, don't think the .380 penetrated the skull. Whole thing was a bummer because I don't want to shoot dogs, but I'm glad the thing didn't convulse and die in front of me.

I got mauled by one while I was out on a run. Left me on crutches for 3 months and 20k in medical bills. For those wondering, I am a grown fit male (5'10", 180 lbs lean) and there was nothing I could do since it attacked from the back.

- We have several illegal pits walking around free here. Even thought i dont like pits, never been attacked by one. My most scary dog experience was when a rotweiller charged at me. i froze, but lucky, the dog only wanted to be peted!

- Here only registered breeders can breed pits. But the suposed pit-bull lovers do that. Breed the poor animal in inappropriate places.

The yards arent big enough, they dont castrate the dogs, abandon them like i said on the other post. The avarage pitbull owner isnt a dog person, is just a over-compensating douche-bag.

Good job man. I know youre a kind soul that doesnt want to hurt anything but you acted correctly. Fuck those mutant timebombs.
