Pick languages that use the Latin alphabet

When someone speaks 4 languages they're usually regarded as a pretty smart person.

And you can make this much easier on yourself if you pick languages that use the same alphabet. So Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and German. And if you wanted to learn an Asian language, pick Vietnamese, as they use the same alphabet as well. So once you learn how to speak it, you automatically know how to read it.

But if you try to learn Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc, then you have to learn an entire new system of reading and writing and that's even harder than learning to speak it.

I think that's why it's common to meet Europeans that speak 4 languages but in Asia they typically only speak 1 or 2. It probably takes the same amount of brain power but you get 2 extra languages

It has less to do with writing systems, and more to do with language families. If you know one romance language, another isn't hard to grasp. On the other hand, Finnish and Basque also use Latin script, but they're not even Indo-European languages, so they're much harder.
