Pettis two fights away of being champ at FW and LW simultaneously?

pettis if he wins belongs at 145 and that will be good torture for him moving down trying to get easy fights

Would be awesome if it could happen but I can see why Dana won't allow it. Having one man own two belts at the same time would be amazing, but he has to defend those belts. Contenders are going to be lined up in each division, and the wait to fight for the belt would be way too long. Also if he ever got hurt, it would make things more complicated.

There's a good chance that Pettis beats both Aldo and Henderson.

Assuming he gets past Aldo, would he face Henderson after that? Awesome rematch and a "superfight", why not?
With a win over Ben he has two belts.

How would this work out? There would be a lot of waiting for contenders in both divisions. I know there's many ifs but it's a very possible scenario.
I think it would be a more likely scenario that Aldo is two fights away from being FW and LW champ. No?

Dana said if Pettis beats Aldo he'll have to defend the 145 belt a few times before getting a shot at the LW title, I bet Pettis didnt realize he was signing up for that

from ufc tonight

This is the course of action that makes the most sense. If Pettis isn't affected by the weight cut, why would he want to go back to LW. Guida already showed it's possible to lay n pray him for three rounds. Even if he won the belt from Bendo, he'd have trouble keeping it against fighters like Maynard. I think he'd have much more favorable matchups at FW.

My guess is FW champion will have to relinquish belt before fighting for the LW championship.

Am i the only one around here that doesnt see him getting past Aldo? Pettis is a sick fighter and beyond talented especially standing but I just feel 145 is Aldo's division. Not saying it wont be competitive but Aldos striking is justscary at that weight.

Wtf? What are you guys smoking? He's good, but not that good. He should face bendo and let someone else lose to Aldo.

Unfortunately he has to defend his FW title a few times first. That was one of the reasons why I said at the time it was short-sighted for Pettis to move down. The UFC wasn't going to likely allow him to hold two titles simultaneously or burn Aldo as their champ then vacate.

What does the FW division hold for Pettis beyond Aldo? Not a whole lot. I think the best case scenario string of contenders would be KZ, Guida (can get that stain off his record), and Edgar. Then he could move up. But that's probably not how it'll work out. You've got Cub, Lamas, Mendes, Siver, and Lentz in the mix. They do little to nothing for Pettis' rep. I think he'd kick Cub's, Lamas', Siver's, and Lentz' asses. Mendes is like a high risk/low reward. The type of opponent who causes Pettis fits is one who counter shoots from distance, like Mendes. Not to mention he'll have to cut a lot of weight for every one of those fights. He's weighing 170+ right now.

i think pettis will defend the FW belt if he wins against aldo, maybe 2-3 times before facing the LW champ. but that depends on the situation of course...

Dana said if Pettis wins he has to defend the belt.

If Aldo wins he has the choice to fought for the LW belt. Hed remain FW champ for that fight but if he were to win he would have to vacate the FW belt

Pettis was already really fast , wonder how faster will he be at FW, really hope he can make a healthy cut

Your entire post is wrong.

Where does Guida fight right now?

Pettis has shown the most trouble staying on his feet against opponents with fast shots from distance. They are more apt to fight at 145.

And Pettis hasn't shown he can be lay and prayed. That's the only fight in his career where he stayed on his back for long period. Can you point to instances in the middle of the cage where he tried to get up but was pushed back down? You can't, because it didn't happen. It's not like he wasn't creating space with sub threats. He favored subs over stand-ups, which he has said repeatedly afterward. He's given no reason not to believe him.

Kinda pissed that Petis dropped down tbh

I've only been watching a few years & he's someone I hadnt actually seen fight that often. Was obviously aware of the showtime kick & that he was pretty good, etc.
However, I thought he looked OUTSTANDING against Cerrone was HYPED for a fight with Henderson. Then it comes out that he's dropping down....I mean wtf?!?

Hopefully its a good fight but other people could have fought Aldo (namely Korean Zombie). But if bendo gets past melendez, then who does he fight next. Even though LW is stacked, the way Bendo handled Diaz makes it difficult to see anyone else beating him

The UFC should have let him fight Henderson next. Gilbert could've waited.

If Pettis destroys aldo, then goes and beats benson Henderson, I think he'd have to choose one division to focus on:

1) featherweight: probably weaker division and size advantage but not as much star power

2) lightweight: tougher division, less size advantage, lots of big wrestlers, but more spotlight and respect

I hope he stays at lightweight. I think beating aldo at featherweight would be a great trophy for him and then he should stay in his weight class. This provided that he beats both of them.

If he beats Aldo, he's staying at FW, not going back up to LW to capture two belts. Dana said so. (Cue the "Dana says a lot of things..." chorus.)

IF Pettis wins (and I really don't think he will, tbh), I still feel like Aldo may use it as a time to go up to LW and see what he can do there. He wouldn't get an automatic title shot, but he would probably be just 1-2 good wins from a shot.

If Aldo wins, he goes on to face Henderson. Pettis may wait it out to see who wins that fight before he decides where to drop anchor. If Aldo beats him, then beats Henderson, it makes more sense for him to stay at FW. If Aldo wins LW title and vacates the FW title, there will either be a 4-man tournament for the new champ, or just the top two contenders, whoever they may be at that time (but most likely UFC puts Frankie Edgar in there because they love him the most after Ronda).
