UFC probably wants him to get one more win before giving him another title shot, I doubt they want him sitting out & waiting for the winner of Merab vs O'Malley 2. One more win against just about anyone ranked (and at least someone with momentum / on a win streak like McGhee) and they'll probably give him another title shot. Maybe he can fight the Merab vs O'Malley 2 winner later in the year.

Or he could just rematch Sandhagen in a title eliminator.

Not a baseless rumor, credible MMA accounts like Adam Martin & Big Marcel have mentioned recently that UFC offered McGhee as an opponent for Yan.

Would be a good fight.
However, I spoke to Marcel Dorff earlier today and we both find it suspicious that the original rumour spreader (Cooper Burke) took his Twitter-post down after he received some critics and people started to repost his rumour:

Must be nice to be Sean O Malley in a division full of absolute killers that have to scrape and crawl to get an inch closer to a title shot. There was a time where some considered Font and Yan the two best boxers in the UFC, certainly would be a fun fight and Font deserved somebody of a higher rank after successfully defending the gates two time in a row, and Yan is one of the few ranked ahead of him that hasn't beaten him yet.
