I don't know about you guys but i see alot of guys that come in and just do pad and bag work with MMA gloves(no hand wraps) and never take an MMA class...Putting on 14oz gloves and doing these things is a huge difference...is this just plain laziness? Anyone else see this?

Maybe they do it to toughen their wrists and knuckles, maybe to throw the punches quicker, maybe it's laziness...

To me it brings up flashes of the 1980s gym scene where people somehow got the idea that it made you look more hardcore if you had weightlifting gloves and a headband on while you worked the Nautilus machines.

In other word, people think they look cool doing pad work with MMA gloves.

for instance:

first time i started doing heavy bag work on my own, i used my 4oz. gloves and ended up temporarily damaging the nerves in my fingers and my hands because there wasn't enough padding and i was really laying into the bags... artisans don't damage their tools, neither should fighters.

Maybe thats the thing..its usually guys that are like 16 or 42 and apparently they just started watching TUF...the sad thing is no one stops and says "hey...may be a good idea to wrap your hands when your flailing away at the bag like that"

Well..we have 2 great Kru's but if someone wants to come in and work out on their own than they can do whatever they want...just saying it seems dangerous on the wrists

That's what it is. With out a doubt. MMA has become such a fad. I fucking hate it.

in that case yeh i agree... fair enough if you are sparring to use MMA gloves but if you are only doing bag work makes sense to use bag gloves....

i dont use mma gloves but it seems like it's a good idea for pad work because since your glove is smaller its harder to hit the target and can improve accuracy. Does that make sense? Of course gloves are better for the bag since you could fuck you wrists up.

I haven't tried it but it seems like it'd be better for accuracy.

I myself use MMA gloves on the bag at home, not at muay thai classes, cause I think my instructor would kill me, and besides that, it's specific muay thai training, so do as the Romans basically...
the reason I use MMA gloves at home, is the same for wearing a cup and a mouth guard while doing my heavy bag work; train as u fight, so when I'm doing the bag as part of my MMA workout, I wear MMA gloves, when it's as a part of my muay thai, I use bag gloves...

I never used to wrap my hands, now i have to as i have bashed my right hand up a few times on things that aren't made to be hit in my less mature years. i wear bag gloves doing bag work and pad work, 16oz's for sparring.
The only thing i can say about them using mma gloves on the bags etc, they're gonna learn the hardway to hit the bag properly :icon_conf
I don't wear glove sometimes on the bag when i'm say just warming up not going hard, just light and fast, but i will be getting another pair of heavier boxing gloves to do bag and pad work out more so for fitness, the extra weight.

Just irks me when I see people do it..we have a Vale Tudo class that these people are more than welcome to join in on and where their MMA gloves would be useful..bu tthat never happens with some of these guys

i use my MMA gloves for bag work sometimes.. but i wear handwraps underneath.. i just like to switch up my routine once in a while..

but i understand what youre saying.. this one guy in my gym bought the yellow gel handwraps that has a rubber palm and the knuckles are covered in spandex material and he thought they were mma gloves... he asked me to spar mma with him.. i told him they were gel handwraps and he was like "look they look like youre gloves" i explained that mma gloves are made of leather.. and that he wasted his money.. he still didnt believe me until i brought in a couple of other guys.. noobs think they know everything..

I totally understand doing padwork with MMA gloves if you plan on fighting in a MMA event. However, doing bag work...i'm still struggling with that idea, it just sounds safter to use boxing gloves.

I too have seen these types. And the conclusion at my gym is that they want to look cool and maybe"feel" a bit more like the guys they see on TV.

I always use 16oz boxing gloves on the bags and depending on the class Ill be using MMA Gloves/Boxing gloves on pads.

I use MMA gloves on bags. I have the PrimeTimes with the ridiculously long wrist wraps. The wrist support is pretty good. They actually feel better than my bag gloves. I can feel if I'm hittng correctly or not like with bag gloves. I do though only go about 85% with them, like I said thats when I'm working my form not so much on power. When I am going to work at 100% I switch to real bag gloves.

On the pads I practically only use the MMA gloves. But thats because we switch up our drilling to a lot of clinch and takedown drills. Its a pain in the ass to try and switch gloves all the time.

Yeah, I dont' know what's up with this. If you hit hard it's a stupid thing to do. Wouldn't work for me because i need a lot of padding on my knuckles.

Ok..Pads are understandable..especially if your getting ready for an MMA bout..but these guys are pretty much just walking in off the street
