Social Pelosi’s house broken into, husband assaulted

"Pelosi Assailant David Depape Was In His Underwear When Police Arrived – Yanked the Hammer from Paul Pelosi."

I gotta say, that there is a quality headline. <45>

I think maybe you have the wrong idea about how rich she is? Lot of misinfo along those lines going around. Here's her place (the reddish brown one in the front):

Not like some kind of huge mansion.

If the partisan accusation wasn't directed ate then I apologize for the snark. I'm really not commenting at any of this through a partisan lens. It all comes from the perspective of my value system, code, philosophy or whatever you want to call it. And from that perspective most political parties and politicians are severely coming up short. Even then, I can see how or why most of the time.

What I can't wrap head around is how some nobody was able to breach the home of the #3 person of the most powerful nation on earth and hold a family member hostage while waiting on said #3 to get home. The colossal nature of the negligence that allows something like that to happen puts it in the same ballpark of likelihood as a conspiracy or aliens in my mind.

The world's a messy place and tensions are getting ratcheted up. Was there nobody in Nancy's security detail who thought to put a minder up her hubby's arse? It sucks, but people adjacent to power are person's of interest to bad actors, so in my mind a security risk and need to be safeguarded.

maybe paul pelosi listed himself on backpage and he misgendered himself and catfished some dude?

you hear about it every now and then when someones looking to hook up with an escort or prostitute and they find out that they've got a dick. often it tends to go violent as the person overreacts to the shame they are feeling after they fallen for a trap. ive read some articles and even seen some episodes of disorderly conduct and other police shows where some dude assaults a hooker after finding out that its a dude.

not trying to suggest thats whats going on here. i dont know about paul pelosi having a gay lover. but i know if i was married to nancy pelosi i would start to question my own sexuality too.
Life is stranger than fiction. All sorts of people do all sorts of things.

I don't think this is one of those sorts of things. Lol. But it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

I don't know about that. The media is the media. When there were less outlets, there were less alternative views and everyone with a TV(which was the vast majority), followed the same script. The "Satanic Panic" was very real, for instance. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes more is more, but sometimes they cancel each other out, and doesn't make much of a difference.

I personally think more outlets allow for more diversity in thought, but maybe we're all just hard wired to follow along whatever the tribe says, regardless.

I think we can all agree that media coverage of crime drives much of our perception of it. There have been some notable differences in the nature of television media since the 70s, especially since the early 90s which I think was the peak of per capita crime rates in the US. Reporting has changed quite a bit with the rise of "action news" and later 24 hour news channels, and more recently of course the much different dynamics of social media. I'm not sure on hard numbers more recently but consider "From 1993 to 1996, the national murder rate dropped by 20%. During the same period, stories about murders on the ABC, NBC, and CBS network newscasts rose by 721%." Source Not surprisingly perhaps, at a time the crime rate was dropping steadily, a majority of people still thought it was on the rise:

Honestly I haven't turned on television news for at least 15 years so I don't have much of a sense for this aspect of different traditional outlets but I wasn't intending to make a tribal/partisan argument. More just about the fact we humans instinctually rubberneck at car accidents + the media is profit-driven and profit comes from views, and increasingly so over time, especially with the rise of clickbait and algorithmic delivery of content on social media.

And I don't think it is unrelated that from 2001 up until 2020, a period where crime rates dropped and then stabilised, a majority of Americans polled thought crime was rising every single year.

On that topic though, there definitely is a partisan aspect to the perception of crime, which in and of itself doesn't indicate political media bias but makes sense based on who's team is in the white house. But the second graph is interesting though. As the article linked below points out, the end of Trump's term in 2020 was an outlier because rather than the normal shift in perception based on what party is in office, Republicans were as concerned with crime as they were when Obama was in office. Coverage was pretty consistent across networks at the time, but that changed in 2021.

Different ways to interpret that so I'll just let it sit. one could argue coverage should reflect reality and violent crime like homicide is way overrepresented versus reality but I reckon the correct amount of media crime coverage is to some degree a value judgement.

This was all I was saying with the original post, 1. Media coverage of crime does not track actual crime rates (for various reasons); 2. Media coverage influences people's perception of crime; and 3. there's something important to consider there and not just in the sense of it giving people the "wrong" perception.

Already have the perp in custody. Eitherway this is a politically relevant story. Will either be due to hyperpolarization of politics at the moment and a political attack (which everyone should denounce). Or it will be due to skyrocketing crime in the area (which everyone should also denounce, but the left won’t).

Seems like a pretty binary choice for underlying cause, what is your prediction? I am guessing the latter (the rising crime) because you know if it were a white supremecist, the mug shot would already be released, IMO anyways.

I guess a third option would be a staged event to make MAGA extremist look like a real threat, but that kind of circles back to due to state of politicking at the moment

they are investigating the motivation though, so that may indicate otherwise

Mod Note: Please do not make any comments that condone the actions here. There is a pop-up n the WR that makes it clear that this is against the rules.

Violence/Genocide- Do not condone violence or genocide on a person or group of people. You are free to attack a person or groups ideas but you are crossing the line when calling for violence. This will be heavily enforced in threads with breaking news involving victims. If you choose to celebrate the victims injuries and/or deaths or suggest they deserved what happened to them, you will likely get infractions.

To be honest, I think him and his wife are crooks. But they're elderly and shouldn't be harmed (outside of possible legal repercussions) and I wish them well...

The problem these days is that when something happens to a democrat you have to question if the story is legitimate or a Jussie Smollet inspired hoax intended to push a political agenda. We will have to wait and see how this plays out.
The Pelosi family are straight, white, gentile, cisgender, etc. so hard to get a hate crime angle out of this. Possibly political. We'll see...
