Squashing damaging reports is not illegal.

Also, it's not clear that the payment to Stephanie Clifford was a "campaign contribution". John Edwards paid hush money to his mistress+child's mother during the 2008 campaign and in the end the jury was unable to agree that the payment was to be considered a campaign contribution.
