What do you all think of Erik Paulson's new dvd Neckbreaker? Im thinking about purchasing it but looking for opinions to justify the price (69$). Trying to improve my no gi submisisions (wont use the neck cranks in class, only chokes). What do you all think of it.....Youtube link...

70$ would be better spent on two giant bottles of Jack Daniels

Or if you could get taco bell to make you a 70lb grilled stuffed burrito.. that would be cool too.
"1$ for a lb of the good stuff" so their add says

Save your money and buy instructionals from guys who have actually won big no-gi tournaments.
Robert Drysdale has a good nogi one out, Shinya Aoki, Marcelo Garcia, Saulo Ribeiro.. all good no-gi dvd's

Hey, Paulson's not a bad instructor by any means. It's just that $70 is the cost for a DVD SERIES on average, not a single DVD, and Scientificwrestling and Jake Shannon are known for overcharging for material. The guy wanted $90 for a 14 year old Japanese-only instructional.

Your money is better spent elsewhere.

Why pay more elsewhere when you can just go to Eric's website to buy his training video's. And Eric is one of the best No Gi instructor's in the business. He's taught Josh Barnett to BJ Penn and everyone in between in the MMA community.

Yeah Erik Paulson has taught submission greats like Ken Shamrock..

Yes..of course you're right, because Ken Shamrock never did crap in MMA and every MMA fighter is supposed to win every fight. Keep typing, because you're just making yourself look like a stupid tool.

So essentially im making my self look like Ken Shamrock??

Im just being a dick - ease up and dont get so touchy.. I like to create controversy to spice up this forum. Gets pretty boring in here with the millions of "i got my blue belt", or "Bjj vs Judo" threads.

Carlos newton was 21 years old and ended the fight with basic take down, armlock. Eric gave him the arm easy as can be. It wasnt a technical match, it wasn

yea, so i guess marcelo garcia ain't shit since he lost his mma debut. big Nog's bjj is crap because he lost to josh barnett and sakuraba doesn't know dick because he lost to Antonio Schembri.

I believe his point was that Paulson is marketing exotic low percentage submissions ($70 is a shitload for a single dvd) but if you watch that fight he wasn't able to defend jiu jitsu 101 (basic takedown, good crosside control, basic transition to mount, basic armbar).
Now having seen some clips of paulson teaching stuff, he does seem to have alot of good stuff to offer, and alot of that stuff comes in handy when you have your fundamentals down, but it sure doesnt replace the basics.

Marcelo garcia didnt get submitted

Neither did Nog, and neither did Sakuraba..

Your comparing apple's to oranges

We are talking about a so called submission veteran getting easily subbed by a rookie. A submission veteran who just so happens to be charging 70$ for a dvd. Not to mention he has NO ADCC titles what so ever. Which everyone knows is the pinnacle no-gi tournament.

newton is good, but this is when Newton had just gotten into the sport. If you guys like Paulsons so much - then order his dvd and pay that price..
I think its way out of line to ask that much.

You need to relax on the trash-talking about fighters if you wanna stick around Sherdog.

Im not trying to trash talk the guy. Maybe he would dominate me..

I am however trying to discourage any new easily influenced guys from throwing down 70$ on a dvd that i personally don't believe is worth it.

You guys have made such a big deal out of my post that you have done nothing more than expounded on what i have said by reposting my post again and again.

If you dont agree with what i have to say thats fine - but the best way to do that is to just disagree with it and let my post fade into the background.. not repost it .

if you disagree with paying whatever amounts of money for which ever product, than just say so and leave it at that. follow your own advise.

to the TS. if you have the means, and feel like it's worth it. than by all mean, get the DVD...and don't forget to post a review. some people pay $1000 for a private session with randy couture, and probably feel it's the best grand they've ever spent. it's all relative.

Actually, my main objection is posting a Dailymotion fight. Please, please, never post fights I or anyone else ups in a public forum....it only leads to us getting found out and someone taking the fight down.

Far as Paulson goes--the guy whose classes I am currently attending is a Combat Submission Wrestling instructor and Erik Paulson is pretty much his favorite guy in the world and hence one of the most respected guy by the rest of the class. There are certainly critiques I'd make of him and some things that I personally don't necessarily like about some of his submission chains but you gotta state things respectfully. For one thing, it's forum policy.

Replace Paulson with Bravo, and you can see why I don't like Bravo's shit

Bravo's stuff is battle tested material that was the basis of his own system. A lot of what Paulson puts on DVD, he confessed that he doesn't use that often. That makes it auxillary stuff, not primary like rubber guard and twister side control.

And once again, $70?! For a DVD on novelty neck cranks? DVD sets cost less than that!

I think you overrate Bravo's stuff a bit. I mean battle tested? What battle? When he submitted Royler with a generic triangle choke? When did you last see people using twister side control at ADCC?

I think the real question is content v. price. And for $70, I don't see how any BJJ DVD is a fair value, IMHO.

I was referring more to rubber guard, but even so, teaching an entire system is one thing, even if the system has flaws and critiques (I kinda lol when I looked at Mastering the rubber guard and he says the techniques work best with gi pants). $70 for a bunch of neck cranks is something else. Content vs. Price, much like you said.

Yep, I think Eddie provides a decent amount of material and quality for the money, even if you don't like his stuff. I don't understand why so many other guys make a generic 50 minute DVD and think they can charge 60-80 bucks for it though.
