I think many people confuse competitive and professional play.
If you theorize how the game will play out at the highest levels of play that's one thing, but most of us are putting in less than the fifty hours a week it takes to reach that level.
For most of us a balanced game with a competitive queue is all we need.

I'm on PC, looking for more people to play some organized games with. Sherbros add me on b.net SavioR#1347

Youre presenting skill of class abilities usage. When im bring up over saturation of it from low CD game mechanics design with casual play in mind, not competitive play. When every notable game that has high viewers/active player base with character specific abilities trigger a CD on usage with a resource drain. For the skill usage triggering a CD in itself doesnt present adequate negatives.

Couple this with infinite ammo and Ultimate percentage or full gain carrying over upon death. The skill ceiling just wasnt lowered, it barely exists.

No, you're presenting skill ability usage. It's your entire argument.

This doesn't make much sense, honestly. Somehow using abilities more often is less competitive? You keep bringing up over saturation which is a meaningless metric without a "correct" point of ability usage which you haven't provided. Since the abilities are obviously heavily influenced by MOBAS theyd be the likely comparison, but abilities are utilized as much or even more often. So, for whatever reason, MOBA abilities in an FPS have to be used half as much as a MOBA because....why exactly? No one knows.

Your entire initial argument was nearly nonsensical since it was predicated on every character in every game spamming every ability off every CD, which will literally never happen.

More than that, you've misunderstood the difference between a skill ceiling, and a skill floor. Ease of use lowers the skill floor, whereas the ceiling is dependant on the utilization of the interacting mechanics by the players. You could easily argue that using skills more often leads to more skill being the catalyst for higher levels of play. As opposed to the notion that making it more like a standard FPS would somehow be more competetive.

I've literally never heard of a "resource drain" being a necessity for an e-sport.

Let's just be absolutely real and honest here. No matter what anyone thinks of Blizzard as a developer I'm gonna ssume their collective experience and success as well as the popularity of games theyve already made that have become successful e-sports probably gives them more insight into what makes a successful e-sport than anyone on this forum. As opposed to thinking that they have to add ammunition boxes or something to make it more likely to succeed as an e-sport.

There's also the fact that several premiere e-sport teams like Cloud9, Luminosity Gaming, and Team Liquid have already been planning team events since the beta.

http://espn.go.com/esports/story/_/id/15422203/why-overwatch-next-big-esport

But they probably don't realize that the game doesn't have ammunition boxes littered acrosss the map for professional reasons.

So, somehow I ended up in the rather exclusive closed beta. I came here to talk a bit about it and noticed there was no Overwatch thread, so here's one.

For those who haven't been paying attention to it, here are the straight basics: Overwatch is a class based, objective-oriented FPS, similar to Team Fortress 2. There are 21 classes or "heroes", and each hero has a primary weapon of some sort plus 2-4 special abilities, including an "Ultimate" ability. Rather than being on a cooldown timer, Ultimate abilities are "charged" by doing damage or playing your role, whether it be healing, tanking or providing buffs.

First I have to remark that the way the game looks when watching someone else play it on Twitch/Youtube is quite different from how the game actually feels when you play it.

Here are my impressions so far:

-It does not play like a "First Person MOBA", it is indeed a shooter. There are a few elements that make the game feel more like Smite than Team Fortress 2 at times, but the MOBA elements do not overwhelm the gameplay.

-The Ultimates, even the more powerful ones, ARE NOT "I WIN" BUTTONS. I've seen a ton of wasted, ineffective and/or quickly countered Ults. A few of the more powerful Ults seem OP at first, but there are ways to counter or avoid the majority of them, if not all of them. They all have voice cues, so you know when one is coming.

-The gun play is smooth, intuitive and fun. I never had one of those Counter Strike moments where I got the drop on someone but still lost the gun fight because I was unfamiliar with the weapon's recoil pattern. No hitbox issues or anything like that either. I can already tell Soldier 76 is going to be a very popular hero among CoD players.

-The meta game is all about knowing which hero to use in which situation, as you can switch heroes at any time, as many times as you like. This is not a game where mastering one single hero is your best route. Reaper is my favorite hero so far, but you can be the best Reaper player in the world and there will still be some situations where Reaper is almost useless. Now, there are certain heroes that will always see play in certain situations. If you're on an attack/defend map, and you're on defense, your team WILL have a Bastion. He's just too useful to not have as a defender. If you're doing payload escort, your team WILL have a Reinhardt. He's perfect for it. But aside from those few must-have heroes for certain objectives, everyone on your team should be CONSTANTLY swapping heroes to counter the other team's composition and achieve the objective. This is where the gameplay really differentiates itself from Team Fortress 2.

-Maps are good. Very pretty and full of Blizzard franchise easter eggs. There's at least one way around every chokepoint and plenty of places to get creative with movement based abilities like Widowmaker's grappling hook, Reaper's teleport ability, Hanzo's ability to climb, etc.

-Play of the Game is shown after every match, but it could use some tweaking, as it sometimes shows rather mediocre plays when much better plays had been made.

-The sound design. Dear Jebus, the sound design. It is absolutely MAGNIFICENT. The music, the voices, the sound effects, footsteps, EVERYTHING sounds amazing.

-Matchmaking is smooth, with a skirmish mode to play around with heroes before the game starts. Voice communication is built in.

-Progression is cosmetic only. Playing gives you experience, and every time you level up you get a loot crate. Loot crates do not need keys or anything, you can open them right away while you're waiting for your next match to start. They can contain hero skins, spray tags, player icons, hero emotes, voice commands, and the like. You can sell unwanted cosmetic items for credits, then use credits to buy the stuff you really want.

-At the end of the match they will display a few cards showing the most valuable players of the game, including those of the losing team, and players can vote to who they think performed the best. If you get 5 votes, it says "Epic!" but I haven't noticed it give any kind of palpable rewards. There is also an extremely comprehensive list of stats and a "Rate Match" as well as "Rate Players" option.

Now, what really impressed me about Overwatch is the depth of play. We all know the mantra "Easy to learn, difficult master", but Overwatch really epitomizes this philosophy. The majority of heroes are simple to learn and play proficiently, but the skill cap seems incredibly high. Both the skill cap of how good players are with individual heroes and the skill cap of how good players are with knowing what hero to use to counter the enemy team. ActiBlizzard recently purchased MLG and has been in talks with ESPN to do more serious eSports. I really think Overwatch will be their eSports flagship. The depth of play is really impressive and I can see competitive play being fun, challenging, and interesting to spectate.

A lot of people hate ActiBlizzard nowadays and may be rooting for Overwatch to fail... but trust me... it won't fail. It's just too good.

If you have any questions about the game feel free to ask me here.
TF2 is better than Overwatch.

You know what would be awesome, if Lúcio's ultimate was dependent on whether or not you you had movement or healing equipped.

Of course, usually it would be more useful to boost everyone's shields to help cap a point, but those last second pushes when most of the team is rushing back to the point after dying? It'd be nice if it just made everyone super fast for a few seconds.

Possibly. I mean, Ive got like 2000 hours played on TF2 so I cant really make a judgement based on a week of playing OW. Also, TF2 has changed and improved drastically in the 9 years since it was released. I wonder what OW will look like in 9 years?

It will not last as long. I like OW but I feel like it has serious issues.
The Nine Classes in TF2 have amazing balance. Teamwork makes the dream work in TF2.
I have arond 6,000 hours in TF2. I have had it since launch. I play from time to time if I want a teamwork based FPS.

Think maybe 6,000 hours in a game might lead to a bit of bias when judging games of the same genre? I think OW will have plenty of longevity as long as they keep adding new heroes. Rumor has it the first content patch will be about a month from now and will have multiple new heroes and maps.

I personally have had more fun in OW than I ever had in TF2, but that might just be because none of my friends played TF2 much so I almost always played it alone, but I've been playing OW with a full group of friends since launch.

6k hours in TF2? Damn, son.

I have 308 hours in it, and I've been playing since you actually had to buy the game's DVD in stores. I even still have the original install disc. It was always the tried and true MP game for my friends when other games just weren't doing it for us.

With that said, this is fucking Blizzard. Basically ALL of their games are hits. I can't imagine Overwatch not lasting for years and years.

I think the only major balance thing I have is that you shouldn't be able to sit on the payloads.
Many of the buildings have arched or curved roofs to keep mobile characters from just camping on them, they should do the same with the payload.

Who cares if its casual or hardcore, high skill/low skill? If you like the game then play it, if you don't then don't.

Anyways on to Overwatch, just had a game where 3 of the 6 players picked soldier 76 so we all decided to use him, lol. We were getting our asses handed to us at first but eventually rolled over them once we got more aggressive.

Started using Genji alot recently after not liking him at first, insanely fun hero to use, he can survive almost any situation. Even with 15 health and surrounded by enemies I was able to escape numerous times, heal up and get back into the fight. And I love the way opponents react to him because of his deflect ability, they just stand there intimidated and afraid to shoot their weapon cause they know if they do I'll deflect, and come in for a melee strike to finish them off. What a rewarding character to use once you understand his kit and how to control him.

My hero rotation goes like this right now:

Mgcree, Soldier 76, Genji, Junkrat, Pharah. Equally good with all of them. Obviously I'm more into the offensive characters, thinking of learning a support or tank character next to try something different.

Whats everybodies rotation like?

You gotta a group of people with that game. Nah because I will point TF2's Cons. The P2P bullshit. Also the obsession with hats and strange weapons. Also I want that Fucking 10th class.

The one thing OW has over TF2 is how well it is on Console. TF2 they just stopped giving a fuck on console. (I would love to see TF2 on PS4.)

Unless they're shielded they are a pretty easy target, although the combo of Bastion on top of the payload and Reinhard shields is pretty deadly. I prefer to use the payload as cover and moving around it depending on the position of the enemies, most of the time you can move the cart right past dangerous snipers in position by simply getting the angle on them so they can't shoot you. Meanwhile idiots are trying to fight the sniper and kill him before even thinking about moving the payload.

That combo is what I am alluding too.

Just played a random offense Route 66, my entire team picked Genji and we got steamrolled, so the next game on defense we all go Torbjorn and wreck shit super cheese mode. Good times.

Just hit level 12. Still sticking with Widowmaker and Genji, although I'm leaning more towards the latter. He's so damn fast and can get anywhere quickly, attack and get out. I don't care about killing anyone, I just want to wear them down or distract them so another teammate can finish them off.

It's pretty funny when 6 strangers all randomly decide to play one character. I had a team win with Torbjorn, too, and then another time I joined a game with 5 monkeys so I had to comply. Unfortunately we lost that one.

I typically am playing with a group of 4 or so people. Soemtimes we dick around like that and we've had mixed success. One of the best victories we had was on Gibraltr on offense which we rarely ever win but we all used Reaper and we dominated. Also won with a full McKree squad on Dorado offense. Got crushed doing a Soldier 76 team. Also lost a full Toblerone team
